Hi! I know a single mama w/ a 3 yr. old. DD who is relocating to the area. Would you be able to tell me about safe, not so expensive areas to live in? What programs are available or how to go about finding them? Any homeschooling groups? She may need public assistance in the beginning. Is that a difficult process?

She's looking here for housing.

Does anyone know the area? She'd rather rent a house, but have had no luck.
(she's only been able to search the net.)

Thank you in advance for any assistance you could give me.

i wish I could help, but I've only been here a couple of months. I'll try to ask my MIL about those areas when she gets home (if she has a chance).

Good luck to your friend!

I lived at the Woods of Eagle Creek for a year. I thought the apartments were nice and roomy (we had a 3 room town house) and the area was kept up very nicely. Another reason we liked it is b/c it was fairly diverse--all sorts of different races, ages, etc. (not really very common in Indianapolis, honestly) We lived next to a family with 3 teenagers who were all so very, very kind.

That area of Indy (the northwest side) is, in general, a nice area. The northwest and Northeast sides are the nicer areas overall, but tend to be pricey. The south suburbs (greenwood, etc) are nice as well, and not neccessarily so costly. The northeast side is AWFUL with traffic. We aviod it like the plague.

That being said, I live just east of downtown n the ghetto. LOL!!!!!!!!!! Seriously, though, there are some great, great, great small neighborhoods on the east side that are becoming popular as far as buying "fixer up" houses. If that's at all an interest to you or your friend, you could search for Fountain Square, Irvington or Little Flower neighborhoods. I would use www.mibor.com if you are interested in buying at all.

Public transportation is passable at best--really it's not nearly as good as it should be for a city this size.

As for public assistance, I don't believe it's too difficult a process.

If you have any other specific questions, I'll be happy to answer.

The neighborhoods I mentioned--Irvington, Little Flower and Fountain Square are all East of Downtown. In general, the neighborhoods are a little rough, but if you find the right area, you'll be very happy.

We live on a block with 10 other families that go to our church. We've all chosen to move closer to the church (some families already lived here, some moved from elsewhere in the area). I'm not saying you'd have to be part of something like that, of course, but it's something that's made our lives in the "rougher" area not rough at all, yk? Good neighbors make all the difference. We could walk to downtown in about 30 minutes.

If you go out a bit farther east, you hit suburbs pretty quickly.

Ack. THere was something else I was going to tell you, but I forget what it was. Will post when I remember. :)

jenilyn~ what do you know about the westside? someone i met says she lives dab smack in the middle of east and west. but she says she does her shopping (sunflower market and trader joe's) on the west side. so i want to look into the area. right now i drive over 40 min. to get to tj's and whole foods. so if you can tell anything about it i would appreciate it.
thank you!
btw, i did get a newcomer's guide in the mail. it has quite a bit of info.
