AS alot of you know im in the process of building my milk supply...which is working but very slowly...
Sara cant take Regular milk based formula, and soy seems to be giving her digestive problems...I just found out that Texas medicaid will pay for "Human Milk" if doc gives you script and its medically ness...I called a bank in Austin and they confirmed what i had heard and said that shipment would be once a week and covered by Medicaid as well...for as long as Sara would need it, or until my supply is up to par... I know these places have VERY strick laws about how they must handle and sterilize the milk (or whatever its called) If it would help your child, although shes gaining weight okay (nearly 10lbs at 8 weeks) and help her digestive issues etc...would you do it???? I just want some opinions about it...TIA yall...
nak in a new york min, esp if i could get it pd for

I'd do it without thinking twice from a milkbank. They do have strict rules about who can donate and they go to great lengths to make sure that the milk is safe. I've heard that it's very expensive so if medicaid is going to pay for it I'd be all over that if it meant not giving formula.
I hope you can get your doc to prescribe it for you.
much love

i desperately wanted to use banked donor milk when i had supply issues, but couldn't find a ped who would recommend he needed it over abm :( if i had my way, that's what he would have gotten, second to my milk, of course.

yep, in a heartbeat
I've donated to a milk bank in NC, as well as privately, and have talked with my two closest friends about "what if's" if something happened to me, and we've all agreed that if any of us are lactating in that situation, we'd pump for each other's babies.
Good luck with your decision! :)

Theo has his lip surgery coming up and the LLL leader mentioned that if I was not pumping enough that the banks would fly it in if I had a prescription @ $320 an oz :eyes:

well, if it turns into where it is no longer an option, what about WIC or someone who can help paying for formula? Thomas couldnt take any soy or milk based either, he has a severa allergic reaction to mik protein so he is now on similac allimnetum
it has helped a lot
i hope it works out for you twist'

Absolutely! I'd do anything to help my child. Luckily with Jaycie (who has severe milk allergies) I was able to nurse her until she was over a year old but if I had had problems, I would have definitely used banked milk for her. I actually donated milk for many many months after Jaycie was born because of my abundance. :)

In a heartbeat... especially if it will be paid for.
Oh, and can I just say YAYYYYYYYYYYY! to your state for paying for it! How awesome is that!

Just make sure you receive milk that is dairy free, soy free. If she's having problems with formula, she will probably need these considerations as well. Ask me how I know. ;)

Well, I would do it... I have a really good friend who is adopting and is desperately searching for donated breastmilk, mostly from private donors, so I know that there are people out there who need it and people who donate it. She is having a very hard time finding people this time, but, with her first child, he never had formula and "nursed" using the SNS and donated breastmilk for over 3 years. If you can get it paid for, you are SET. I would definately do it! Have you looked in to the SNS? I used it when I had supply issues and it really worked.

I'd take it in a heart beat. I also have a friend who takes our mutual friend's frozen supply of milk. Actually, she has taken some from several friends. If I was close to someone bf'ing or pumping and I was in need and trusted them, I'd take it too!

i would. i have donated breastmilk for a close friend's baby and I know that it was so great for her while building up her milk supply to supplement with that in the sns. (not that you couldn't use formula in the sns)
i hope your ped agrees

Well, I'll be the voice of dissention.
I would only take milk from someone I knew. The immunity issues are very important to me and I really feel like bm is a closely personal and/or local issue. I appreciate mamas donating, but I would only want milk from my area.
I know I'm crazy.

The milk from a milk bank would be pasteurized and tested, so completely safe. :) I'd do it for sure if I were you. Hope you find a doc to write a script.

my concern would be that you need as much stimulation as possible to get production going up. Bringing in foodsource from anything but you could affect production. Or are you using a sns?
best wishes :)

I'd definitely do it!! We were having problems with my supply and Eli gaining weight and a friend who I knew and trusted pumped for me to supplement him with, I am forever grateful to her for that!

Donor milk was just such a blessing for us. I didn't qualify for banked milk (my babies were healthy enough that they did okay on formula) but received donor milk from friends and acquaintances in our area. And it was just so precious to us. There's nothing else like it. I also donated later on as my milk came in, and passed on the kindness we received. It makes me sad that we're so accepting of cow's milk as a normal food, but human milk seems like a gross thing to some people.
