Please don't laugh at me, but I've never learned how to sew knits and I want to try. (My only excuse is that I'm a self-taught sewer who learned in the SCA and Ren Faire circuit--not a whole lot of knit fabric in period.) I hear people talking on here about how they've never sewn with wovens and can't imagine how people do it, and I'm just the opposite.

Can anybody recommend a good site or something with some basic information on how to sew with knits? Like what stitches to use (with a regular machine, I don't have a working serger), how to deal with stretch, whether you need to use spray starch or something to combat curling, etc.? I'm a total novice here, I don't even really know what I need to know...

tw1h...I'm new to knits too, and found that the 1/03 Ottobre magazine has a nice basic instruction page to get started. If you don't want the mag (its wonderful, btw, and you can order back issues) I could copy the page and send it to you, just pm me your addy. Also if you google search sewing knits, i think there is good information at patternreview.com or on the threads magazine website.

the mamas here or at sewingmamas.com have great insight, too...beckydyane, Pam, or Mosaicmama come to mind as people who have answered my questions about sewing knits. I, like you, have only sewn with wovens, and these knits are a whole different world!! Not impossible, but there is a learning curve. Once you get the hang of it its really quite easy.

Good luck and HTH :)

i was really scared of knits too LOL but they really aren't that hard and i started before i had a serger. i tend to pull/stretch it a bit when sewing. i don't use starch or anything, so i don't know if that would help or not. i have only had a couple actually curl when i have been trying to sew it. i use a straight stitch for the most part. the decorative stitches tend to get caught up in my machine. hope that helps some
