View Full Version : AP quilt square swap closed - now let's make plans

DH and I were talking last night about what AP has meant to us and how much we have learned about ourselves and parenting, etc. We've come so far as parents and have a lot more to learn. I don't have any support for the ap lifestyle from my family and we ahve few ap irl friends.
So, all that to say, I would love to do a quilt to celebrate attachment parenting. I was thinking we would all design a square and then make identical ones for everyone in the group. It could be anything that is meaningful to you about ap. I like larger squares, so I was thinking 10" squares, but I am open to other suggestions.
eta:
we are doing 10 10.5 " squares. You also need to do a 4x4 sqaure for the back that tells about your sqaure including who made it.

I'm not all that great at piecing squares, but I would totally love to be involved with this quilt if it's OK to simply cut out squares of cloth to send. I have a material in mind.

I don't plan on pieced squares either. I have an embroidery design in mind for mine. That is one thing I think will be really fun is that different kinds of sqaures that people will design.
I'm in, I have something in mind as long as the number of participants isn't too high, or maybe something slightly simpler if its a big swap :)

since there are a variety of people, doing the "obvious" pink or blue would be silly. How about something nice and cheery like a yellow/orangey sun based quilt or perhaps neutral greens? I would love to see something in all shades of green... I love green... I am a green junkie!
but I love all colors, so I am open to anything! I can do hand dyed fabrics, right? :)

The sun idea is great, but I also love green and purple and green is my favorite combo. What does everyone else think?
Margaret, what colors are in the fabric you have in mind?
Mamaselena
07-30-2005, 01:13 PM
you are right, I think green is a better color idea... if you want to brighten it up, you can go green/yellow, if you want to "fall" it up you can add browns, add blues for an ocean boy-ey theme or???? green is just a good all purpose color ;)
my completely unbiased opinion, of course, rofl ;)
greens are fine with me, but i also love the look of a rainbow myriad of colors pieced together with one unifying fabric for the sashing/border..... i think then everyone would be able to truly express their own artistic style, but one color theme would be beautiful too.
hmmm... if we go with one color, do we choose anything in that color family or do we choose a particular color like earth greens, or lime greens or teal greens?
~jo
TulaneMama

I was thinking greens too.

If we want to do 10" finished squares then we should make them 10 1/2" unfinished allowing for 1/4inch seam allowance. I think i will make the quilt 45x54 - a nice throw for the couch.
RocketScientist
07-30-2005, 05:22 PM
Please don't base it on the fabric I had in mind - I'm thinking now others might not like it, and I'd be willing to change to whatever color theme others are thinking of. I can save my fabric to use as the border. And what I might do instead is embroider or draw a picture on the right color fabric. Anyone know the best fabric pens to use, so they won't wash out?

I'd l;ove a bright sunny yellow/orange, but purple or green are also fine with me.

Sounds like greens and 10.5" squares is the consensus.
So, 12 squares mailed by sept 15th in the green family. I can't wait to see what everyone comes up with:)
Margaret, I use the fabric paint pens for making faces on dolls for toddlers or infants. When heat set, they are permanent and hold up well to washing.
Selena, I think I am going to use a breastfeeding mom design that I have had for a long time, unless I digitize something else myself.
I will see if I can dig up a pic for you later.

I was thinking doing a sticker on the back. I hadn't thought of making it part of the sqaure or part of the quilt.

The reason i said this is that we have a millenium quilt (2000 pieces) and every block that was made has a special block in it saying the makers name and where they live (international swap). I  it! It is so fun to always know where the blocks came from and i think it would be especially nice this time around since it is an AP quilt.
tmrhopkins
07-31-2005, 05:06 PM
Maybe we could write it on a small square piece of muslin using a fine point permant marker. Then we can decide to use it on our quilt or not. Like I would put the name squares on the back or something......
*I* just think it would be nice to see all the different names, places, ideas, and even handwriting- but then I am open to all ideas and what ever the group wants to do.
TulaneMama, can you post a picture to give us an idea of what your millenium quilt (2000 pieces) looks like?
Tawnya
PS I was going to embroider a square, not piece....

I have my squares cut, and I've started drawing the design on - have mostly-completed about half of them.
If we cut pieces of muslin and write our name/location/username/reason on them, how large should those be?
Maiden Comfort
08-19-2005, 11:30 PM
OK, just catching up, lol.
An idea for the small squares with names, etc on them. ON some quilts they have a thing (that I can not remember what it's called for the life of me right now!) on the back that tells about the quilt. If we all did uniform size squares of plain muslin, we could piece them togehter in the order we place the blocks, and then applique it to the quilt back.

Just catching up here, but what if we have Allison take an open spot and then do ten squares instead of 12 to make up for the other two open spots?

And can you also tell us how big the squares should be if we want to include our name, username, etc? I have some off-white cotton material for it, but am not sure it'll be quite enough if it's to be used for 10.5x10.5" squares.
Thank you!
Maiden Comfort
08-21-2005, 05:18 PM
The thing I was thinking about for the back would only be like 2x2" squares pieced together to form a bigger square, and then you applique that to your quilt back. So it's not the quilt back itself, make sense?
And 10 squares is fine with me :)

Ok, I know we said greens... do we need to be monochromatic? I made my first one today and I really like it, but it's a bit (ok a lot!) loud: lime, fuschia and this golden yellowy color. The background is the lime. I don't want to make nine more if this just won't do, I'll change to more mellow colors if people would prefer.
