Wow. It must have some seriously stringent guidelines, cause ds has been homeschooled since mid 4th grade, and had standardized testing every year, and done really well! He tested for our top school in the disctrict, and only didn't get in by a whisper due to math this past spring. He should be in 7th this year, and Calvert said he should be in 4th grade math and 5th grade everything else!!!
I'm bowled over. I agreed to 5th grade math, as I think he is missing some foundational stuff he needs, and I was the same way and am now crippled for life in math it seems. But I disagreed with 5th grade grammer, social studies, science, etc. Said no way, the kid will be bored out of his mind!
So, I realize a short test on any one day in a kids life isn't very representative of said child's ability, but I guess I was surprised by the discrepancy. Anybody have any similiar experience?

Calvert is typically(yet not totally across the board) advanced by atleast 1 year compared to public school systems. There have been some student who have gone directly into college after finishing Calvert 8th grade. I have noticed over the years that there are people who are surprised by the lower placement than expected, particularly in the middle school grades. I have also noticed over the years those who put their children in a higher level usually regret it...but again not always.
Have you discussed the results of the placement test with an ed counselor? You can place him where you wish if you don't plan to use ATS. If you plan to use ATS, then maybe they would be willing to do a tentative higher placement that would be more in line with where you believe he would be better placed.
Calvert is academically rigourous and the 5th grade we are doing now is quite challenging and exciting for my 5th grader( who is profoundly gifted) and I at times struggle to answer his questions, having to call Calvert or do some additional research in order to help explain things. There is also a HUGE amount of writing and studying required for 5th+. Have you seen a sample of the materials they suggest to see how things would feel? Why not order it, review it and return it if it doesn't seem like something he would do well in and enjoy?
Not sure if I helped at all though!!

Thank you so much for your input, it was quite helpful!
He will be using Calvert through the public virtual school system, so we will not use any support of Calvert's aside from the materials. I am, however going to be in touch with whoever assessed his test, as the virtual school would like me to do so. They've agreed to place him in 7th grade scholastic Calvert with 5th grade math. Ds is gifted in reading and comprehension, but somewhat disabled in math, grammer, writing and spelling...and is being assessed for a 504 or IEP due to ADHD and cancer. I really hope that the combo of all of those things will be the key to his success.
Luckily, I can order it, and if we have to go lower, I can keep it and order a different grade level.
Thank you! Anyone else?
