It's something you slip on the pen/pencil that teaches you to hold it properly.

Vidura finally decided to try to write, but I can't show him as I don't even know how to hold a pen properly :( When I learned to write I couldn't decide between left and right, then I settled for right hand and broke my hand and arm severly and had to re-learn with the left, since then I've been holding my pen in a very strange way, works for me, but most peoplefind it rather strange...

Anyway, I'm trying to find some of these things for Vidura but not sure what they are called. If you have the name and where I can find them that would be great :)
If you have some FS that would be even better, hehe.

I've called them pencil grips, I don't know if thats the correct term though. I've seen them at walmart, the teacher supply store, stationary stores etc... You might also try getting "Fat" pencils. They are designed for little hands.

I think I know what you're talking about, it's not the same thing.

The ones i'm looking or are kind of "triangular" shaped, with three "dimples" where the 3 fingers go. Not a grippy thing but rather a "finger positioning" tool.

Like if you stuck a piece of dough arounf a pencil and held it, and left the "print/spot" where fingers go. ykwim?

I am not sure what they are called, but teacher's stores have a variety of them. They are used a lot for remedial work and I've used them with my daughter. With Vidura, I humbly suggest you try the Montessori method for achieving the correct grip. Instead of pencils or markers, peel and break crayons into very small pieces and offer to the child. They automacially pick them up with proper grip because there are no other options. The Handwriting Without Tears system (which is awesome) also uses this method.

I'll try that, thank you very much for the suggestion :)

You may want to look at the Handwriting Without Tears Website at www.hwtears.com. They have a writing readiness checklist and thier materials (especially the books) are very reasonably priced. The audio CD for preschoolers is fun and even has a song for how to hold the crayon.

I'll second the HWT method and the breaking crayons method.

You can look at the program locally at the Homeschool Gathering Place, which is on Glenwood Ave near the Crabtree Valley Mall.
