I dont mean skorts, exactly.... like a pair of leggings, only their shorts.... attached to the skirt.

Ive tried it three different ways now and they dont work. one, and the one that looked the bst so far was to put elastic in the shorts and skirt then sew them together - what a waste! :(

any tips on how to get this to work? any pix?

I haven't tried what your describing but it sounds similar to doing reversible pants. I've only made a couple pairs of those but what I've done is press the seam allowance down, then sew most of the way around the top. Then I make another line of stitching for the casing and sew that all the way around. Then insert the elastic through the opening I left at the top. I'm horrible at describing things I'm sure someone else could do much better.

What kind of fabric are you using?

My dd has a skirt/skort like that that is just put like this:

shorts inside the skirt, fold down the waist twice for elastic casing and then sew casing closed and insert elastic. Or do like I do and sew the casing with the elastic already inside stretching as needed to work it all the way around... KWIM?

thats how I do the elastic too! learned it from the Sewing FAQ here!!! awesome way to do it! lol

when I did it the way you described, with folding them over together - the skirt bunched up in odd places and i didnt get a good waist band out of it.


and to answer the other poster's question - right now i'm using sheets! lol until i get it right, i dont want to mess up any real fabric! though, yesterday i did use some sotra knit that was left over from another project.

I've only done this with relatively lightweight fabrics - I just baste the upper edges of shorts and skirt together and then treat them as one to put the elastic in.
