I am kinda sad. My dd has her period and hasnt told me. She got kind of a mini period several months ago - just one day of spotting. And then I thought it didnt come again because I asked her and she said no. I read about that being common - a small amount of spotting and then no period for up to a year or more. She is only 10 but will be 11 this summer. Anyway, I did some laundry today and she definitely has it and I just checked and my extra pad supply has been pretty heavily used so I think she could have had 2-3 cycles already without telling me. I was VERY private about it to - got it and borrowed stuff from my sister for MONTHS without telling my mom so I definitely identify.

Anyway, I want to get her a few diff. types of pads together and maybe a bottle of midol, a calander to track her cycle and some chocolates and just put together a care package for her and leave it on her bed. I know she wouldnt want to do cloth but I really want to find a source for unbleached pads so she can have a healthier alternative to the bleached. Any online sources? Thanks - Josie

I TOTALLY indentify with your dd (and you) by the way! I was in denial about me pd for months after I first got it. I was so embarrassed about it, and the fact that you're making this easy for her really is something I'm going to remember to do with my own daughters.

There is a book out there that I just got for dd. We're pretty open about this in our house, even though she hasn't gotten it yet. She really like the book and it's a very easy read.
The series is called Beautifully Made, it doesn't take about the "s" word at all just what's happening to your body. There are 3 books. The first is about what to expect for those who haven't had their first pd yet.
The second is for those who do have their pd and what to do.
The third book is for mom and to help her talk to her daughter
You can order them off of their website www.generationsofvirtue.org

I have seen them at a local health food store, so if you have one, you can go there... though I am pretty sure if you bought in bulk online they would be much cheaper...

((hugs)) what a milestone.. wow... I didn't tell my mom right away either...

yep to the health food store or even Whole Foods if you have one and while you're there, get her some Mag Phos (homeopathic) for those cramps! ;)

we live about 2 hours from any kind of crunchy grocery or health food store but I found some pads at drugstore.com and also bought her 2 mini cloth lunapads from there as well. I just checked out Gaim too and those look good. Might need to try those for myself as I am wanting to go with something more natural although a bit wary of cloth since I have a heavy period and had a bad experience in the past with a fungal infection in my nether regions while using cloth postpartum. Sorry TMI LOL!!! Anyway, Thanks everyone. I fyou have any more ideas on good first pads, cloth or otherwise, books, gift ideas, your experiences, etc let me know.

I know pandoraspads.com has organic tampons, not sure about pads. She does have organic cloth pads.

My dd is 10 too...I'm just not ready for this! I don't think she's close to having it yet, she has not breast-budded yet and I've heard it comes about 2 yrs after that.

But wanted to say that your dd will surely appreciate your support of her by a supplies basket.. my mom did that for me and it meant sooo much!
