So I got my machine unloaded and set on a temporary table. I looked up at my wall, and I don't have 4 spools of any one color!
Those of you who have coverstitch machines, do you have 4 spools of every color? eeks!
I guess I will have to invest in more thread, right?

I don't either, but I heard a good tip was to wind enough bobbins of the same color. :)

I'm working with my mom's coverstich machine right now and my serger. Coverhemming only takes 3 threads so that would be only 7 if you wanted to get everything loaded up. I've just been doing all the serging possible on my project and then cutting the threads and moving to the coverhem machine- tying on and pulling through and doing all of that that I can. The project I'm doing now does require me to do one more step at the serger but since both machines I can tie on and pull through easily it hasn't been a problem.

Actually, my coverhem takes 4... 3 needles! :)
GREAT idea about just cutting and then tying on... I bet that saves a ton of time!

The only thread color I have 7 cones of is white. I also have 4 of red and navy but that's about it. I really hate changing the thread though so I use white on most everything unless I think it would look really tacky. The white I have is cotton though so I can dye an item after I've sewn it. Ideally I'd like to have 7 cones of at least white, off white, red, navy, and black.
I'd never thought of just using bobbins of different colors until I was at Shannons on Tues and I saw Alison using a bobbin on her coverhem. I thought that was a great idea although I would definitely have to buy some bobbins. I only have one bobbin right now. All my others have disappeared. I just thought it was a great idea especially for a color I wouldn't be using very often.

Well her's has a three needle option as well but I don't use that for most applications- ok I've never used it yet. If I did I would be doing it decoratively and I assume it would be fun to do different colored threads :)

but i always have to rethread the needles.
I just have ALOT of thread. It really saves time. Or have LOTS of cones of cotton and do a big lot of sewing and dye in batches later. I do that alot but it isn't "fun"

I bought some "things" at the "Viking Village" where I just bought my new Coverstitch. Not sure what these are called, but they are almost like a small empty cone and you wind them on your regular sewing machine (just like you are winding a bobbin) from a cone. There was 4 of these in the package, so from one regular cone you can get 5 cones - 4 smaller plus the original one. They cost me $20., but I figured it was definitely worth it because I too only have 4 cones of each color and want to keep both the serger & cover stitch usable.

I have 4 cones of every serger thread, but I don't use maxilock in the coverstitch machine. I use gutermann (since it is topstitching). I buy 2 of all the gutermann colors, unless it is some really weird color that I'll never use again. I buy the 1,000 yd cones of gutermann from sewtrue.com. I just wind one bobbin full to use on the coverstitch machine (and in the sewing machine). I've never even used my triple needle option.
I do buy 3 spools of white, black, and natural.

I have these too and I love them! The spools hold a ton (WAY WAY WAY more than a bobbin). It's called an Easy Winder. I bought a package of 8 extra spools, too. I bought them from Nancy's Notions here:
https://www.nancysnotions.com/NNVia/index.jsp
Just do a search for "Easy Winder" and you'll find it. $17.98 and the extra spools are $9.98.
Also, I see there is a coupon on the Home page for 10% off your order over $25.
I'm tempted to get another package of 8 extra spools. Now that I've got the new CS machine, I think more spools would come in very hand.

I, too, buy 4 of every color when purchasing serger thread. Im a bit anal about matching thread...
I plan to do the bobbin trick (by just pulling it out of the sewing machine or creating a new bobbin) and then moving two spools over to the CS. I dont have much choice since I have no more room to house thread. :)
