I'm going to be spending a week or two in bed. I know I could just watch TV and read but I hate spending all that time doing nothing productive. How long does it take to learn to knit? Any hand sewing projects you can think of? TIA! :)

Ummm, doesn't this belong in the personal place? ;)

As for activities, a laptop would be very high on my priority list. You could try a handmade cathedral window quilt. I started one while on bedrest with Isabelle....I think I still have it somewhere. How about crocheting or knitting??

I'd say knitting. It'd be pretty easy, especially if you have the laptop - there are a few really good websites with video tutorials.

Sorry, I didn't read your whole message. Knitting is really, really easy. Get some online instructions and go for it.

Do you scrapbook at all? That would be a good bed activity too..... Or you could just catch up on your sleep. I honestly wouldn't plan too much since when they say you need to stay in bed, you usually don't feel like doing a whole lot else. I had a breast reduction and I spent a lot of time in bed sleeping afterwards. It was Christmas time, so I did handpaint all the ornaments for my tree and instructed DH on where and how to hang them. He required that I took my "happy pill" aka my pain meds before we began each session....

Knitting doesn't take that long to learn. Find yourself a children's how to book & go for it! Lots of easy, free patterns on the web.

I knit like a fiend when I was in bed after my surgery in December.

It wouldn't take long to learn the basic knit stitch. That is all you need to make a basic washcloth. A few simple stitches more and you can make all sorts of things.

I have a knitting site here:

If I see you on Thursday, I'll teach you to knit :)

Edited because I can't do Friday lol

That site rocks... I just need to actually use some of the transfers I got from them. They are so cute.

It's in my sig line...I'm getting rid of the stretched out baby belly :smirk: and having my ab muscles sewn back together.

ETA: I'm still contemplating having the big ole boobies lifted too. :hahaha:

Kori,
I have tons of needles and a DVD for learning how to knit or crochet. You can pick it up whenever. I have the Stich & B*tch book too

Knitting is great and if you pick a project that is meant to be felted than even better because felting hides lots of mistakes. ;)
How about needle felting? I've got lots of roving and some felting needles. I could send send some up with Allison for you.

I made that one for my mom and she loved it! You can also do it with Cascade for much less $$.

FWIW, I only remember being in bed for maybe 2 days at home. I spent the night in the hospital. You won't be yourself, but you won't be a quivering mass either ;) The worst is sleeping the first week, make sure you've got comfy blankets for the recliner.

I say, grab some knitting, lay in some good DVDs, hook up the laptop, and you're good.

Thank you, that makes me feel better. :) I won't be spending the night in the hospital. I don't have a recliner. I wonder if it's too late to go buy one or if it's something that needs to be ordered. I have someone taking care of the boys and someone else taking care of me for 6 days after the surgery. I was kind of hoping to stay in bed for a few days. It will be the first time in years I've done that LOL. Not having to take care of anyone and having someone take care of me sounds like a vacation...a painful vacation ;) . What kind of pain meds did you get? Maybe I should pm you. :D

I can't resist.. Im a wannabe hippy.. lyrics from the play "Hair"
You can lie in bed
You can lay in bed
You can die in bed
You can pray in bed
You can live in bed
You can laugh in bed
You can give your heart
Or break your heart in half in bed

You can tease in bed
You can please in bed
You can squeeze in bed
You can freeze in bed
You can sneeze in bed
Catch the fleas in bed
All of these
Plus eat crackers and cheese in bed

theres more.. but Im sure some of the words would be bleeped out! :joker:

Anyhow.. when I had to spend 2 weeks in bed.. I ate.. a lot- ugh. watched movies on dh's laptop & read a LOT of books.

since nobody's mentioned it... if you quilt you can do hand piecing. I'm making some blocks that have curved piecing and I decided to try it by hand instead of wrestling it through the machine. It's pretty easy. You could do your cutting and mark seamlines before-hand.

eta- the other handwork I'm planning on doing soon is some redwork embroidery for a baby quilt. I don't know if you're interested in that but there are some cute designs available.

:)
