jackson spits up....usually it's only just after i nurse him. completely different from his sister. she almost never spit up.
i'm not sure if there are any things i can do to help him. if i keep him on his back but on an incline for about 5 minutes he does ok. definitely can't touch his belly just after a feeding.
someone suggested i get him adjusted at the chiropractor...need to talk to my chiropractor about this and see what she thinks.
any advice?

Catie is a spitter-upper too. Emmaline never really was, so I'm just now figuring out how to deal with this, lol. Usually she'll nurse on one side, spend about 5 minutes on my shoulder, then nurse on the other side, and need to be upright for 10 to 15 minutes. (Still spits up some, even upright.)
My personal favorite was when she was nursing so vigorously that milk was coming out of her nose, yet she didn't want to stop, lol.
Her ped said that if the quantity wasn't out of control, it didn't seem to pain her, there was no funky smell, etc then it was ok. Hadn't thought of the chiro route...I'll have to check on that. Sure would make for less laundry. ;)

yes...i'm not worried about it being a problem...he was at birth weight 4 days after birth and he isn't bothered by it at all..just me.

My dd spit up until she was over a year old. Yuck! But, she weighed over 25 pounds at a year, so it definitely didn't hurt her growth!
It really was more bothersome to me than it was to her.

Indigo refluxes really badly and she is tiny enough that I worry about it. I see a big difference when I keep her sitting up for 30 mins after eating.
Naiya did the same thing but stopped when I cut out dairy and caffeine.
Liam was a terrible terrible puker. With him I cut out dairy, and wasnt drinking caffeine. In retrospect I wonder if he was allergic to wheat. I let the ped convince me that it wasnt necessary to medicate him because his weight gain was so good. He would literally puke after every feeding, most of the time it was projectile vomiting. Anyway, in retrospect I wish that I had !0 known more about food allergies/intolerances and elimination diets, and 2) medicated him--- I can't imagine puking multiple times a day for 9m- a yr, and don't know what I was thinking when I let him go unmedicated. I jst thought the puking was part of having a baby-- until I had another. Now I realize that there was truly a problem that I was ignoring. The ped told me it was caused by an underdeveloped muscle between the esophagus and stomach, and yes, I think that could have been part of the issue, but I think there was more going on.
Things I found t ohelp-- propping slightly while feeding. I fed Liam in bed with me, with his head propped on my arm. Not burping him after also seemed to help. Burping always led to puking. Something else was moving him as little as possible for about 20-30 min after a feeding. If I could get him to go to sleep while nursing the chances of him puking went down.
Gotta run, little one is complaining about wanting more food and daddy is looking at me expectantly, lol

Julie,
You might have an overactive let down , causing him not to get enough of the hindmilk while nursing. When I had makenna this was the case with her, she still gained weight and everything, but I switched her feeding to the same breast every 2 feeds and she stopped spitting up and her poops got much more mustard-y. HTH :)

Julie, the two things I think have been posted, but I'll regurgitate them in spirit of the thread
1. overactive letdown--do you have any of the signs of this? When you let down does your milk gush out? Does the other side have sympathetic let down, also gushing out? I forget the other signs... Anyway, as Tara said, it can cause green poo and spitting up. I had to go to every 4 hours on the same side. So every time he needed to nurse in that 4 hour spell, I nursed the same side, then switched to the other side for hte next 4 hours. As he got a little older, I went with 2 feedings on the same side, as he would often go 3 hours between feeds.
2. Dairy sensitivity--watch this. Does the stool look mucous-y? Does it stretch? (I don't put my finger in it...ewww, LOL! But I do use the diaper to test...if I pull apart the diaper, does the poo stretch with it?
IF he gets colicky.... a rash... starts being more than just spit up (as in, vomit!)... stools turn green... he gets diarrhea... then think about cutting out dairy from your diet.
I cut out dairy by 10 days old--as soon as my milk came in he started vomiting daily, and he never really had normal stools, since by the time the meconium passed he had allergy diapers. I ended up cutting out a lot more than just dairy, and it continues, but dairy is often the first culprit. Actually, in general, dairy is often implicated in reflux.
HTH!! Anders spit up a lot too... it was mostly under control however, with dietary changes. It FINALLY quit, I think when I finally got everything out of my diet that bothered him, around 6 months. Now if he spits up, I know he's having a reaction.

the stool is the right color but not as mucousy as i remember w/ savannah. i DID put my fingers in it b/c i wanted to describe it to my mom. It is more rubbery and firmer than what i am used to. what does this mean?
And as far as let down. I always leak a lot while nursing. I am not sure if this is a problem or not. Like I said...his stools are the right color yellow..not green..but the thickness/consistency of them is what concerns me more.

not moving him helps a ton
he doesn't do it as much at night in the bed with us
and yes...burping leads to puking

I was going to ask if it was green... Hmmm...
Well... ask the chiro when you get a chance. It might work wonders!

thirding overactive let down...i definately had it w/ ds (#2 -ducts stretched out? lol) and his poops weren't green until a few weeks old.
also his poop description sounds like my kids w/ dairy probs...especially when you said rubbery... try cutting it out...won't hurt any
faith is on zantac, the first baby i've allowed medicated for reflux. helping so much, but jackson's sounds so mild still, i'd try eliminating for now. sometimes it gets worse, so just be alert to that.
i just get used to stinking like cottage cheese. lol

forgot to ask if it "hurts" him?
that's why we medicated faith...we'd see/hear it come up, and she would wince and let out a painful wail. :( it was causing her alot of pain. plus i was concerned about her aspirating it. she's always stuffy too because it refluxes up into her sinuses./..stuffiness is a poss. sign of gerd fwiw.
hth a bit

i'll keep an eye on it. it doesn't seem to bother him...as far as being painful.
overactive let down...what is that? what can i do about that?

well...your letdown comes down very forcefully and causes more gulping, air swallowing. usually accompanied w/ too much foremilk. (causing green poops)
i'm not sure what you can do about it, in the past i've pumped some off...not easy
now, i just put my pointer above my nipple and middle below and gently press back on my breast when i feel let down...stems the flow a bit. hth

Overactive letdown, yes what meg said and now that I read those words we have it again. Only his poops aren't green.I nurse from the same side every 2 feeds( about 4 hours) again too cause I suspected it after I posted the first time ;) Too much foremilkand not enough hindmilk. Also, Sully gulps and usually chokes with my letdown, I m going to try Megs tip though . How are his poops now ? Still normal?
