would there be any interest in seeing it? i don't sew but i love lurking and seing all you guys' work...and dh said over my shoulder "imagine what they could sew with some of our tie dyed fabric"....

i am digging dyeing the mandalas so much and hell maybe i could even have a dress or skirt made from it.

what kind of fabric should i get to try it out? i need something thinner, like t-shirt jersey or thinner, to make the mandalas come out right. mostly or all cotton or other natural fiber...maybe muslin? i know nothing about this. what would be a good fabric to try--not too expensive, and hopefully dharma carries it? which would be good to make clothes and other stuff with?

samples i can get (http://www.dharmatrading.com/html/eng/3413-AA.shtml)

what do you think of cotton voile?

can i just pick you mamas' brains about fabric please?

Joy! I'm glad to see you over here :)

I'd definitely NOT use muslin. It's too thin, IMO, and can rip easily. Plus, I've found that it doesn't hold dye well for some reason. I'd get Kona cotton :)

tell me about kona cotton? i see it's 60x60 thread count. would it be better to get the 60" or 45" wide one?

i need one of the fabrics i try to be something hippie mamas would like their clothes to be made from...light and airy and layerable and twirly. :hippy: i thought the voile (http://www.dharmatrading.com/html/eng/3501-AA.shtml) might work for that one. it's an 80x72 thread count.

It's like quilter's cotton. Nice and thick, but super soft and dyes very nicely

If you're wanting something more flowy...I'd go with rayon.

joy

ack rayon is a dirty word in this house...i have a hard time dyeing it up and i am very unhappy with the ripping problems i hav had with rayon clothes. hmmm maybe i haven't been trying the right kind.

What about:
HCG - Heavier Cotton Gauze 50"
It would probably work well for peasant tops.

Oh, and I forgot to say that I think that is an awesome idea! I love your mandalas -- they're so gorgeous.

I do have some lightweight gauze you can have FFS if you want to try that :)

I love your mandalas. I think a heavier cotton gauze is a great idea. I don't like rayon either, but you could do silk yardage. I have some batik silk thatis going to be a skirt for me when I stop petting it long enough to sew it. lol

so, for silk...what do you seamstresses use? i am sure the 5mm i use for canopies and belly dance veils is too light...is 8mm heavy enough? is 10 mm too heavy?

joy

i'm thinking 8mm would be the right weight. anybody got an opinion on that? :bounce:

Joy, I think it would depend on what it was going to become. Lighter weights make great blouses, heavierweights would be good for skirts/dresses. I have no idea how heavy the different mm's are. Just went and fondled my canopy though lol (definately too lightweight to try to make clothing with other than shawls). I think the 8mm would probably be heavy enough for tops, but the 10 might be needed for other things. Gauze would be wonderful too.
I know Selena dyes both muslin and quilters cotton (LWI) and I think both have their place. The muslin is great for household stuff (napkins etc) but quilter's cotton would be preferable for clothing.
I know I pestered you about this before, so I'm just excited about the prospect of yardage in general-- silk, cotton, BOTH (although I can't buy until June :tear: )

Joanns has some TDF egyptian cotton that is so smooth and silky. Its pricey but I used a coupon and bought a bunch for a cut price.

ok, i'm gonna try the heavy gauze, the harem weight cotton ( :cuc: )

some cotton voile, kona cotton, and some 8mm silk. i'll let y'all know what happens!

oh and BTW i think i am gonna get the entire fabric line's samples from dharma. that's like 50 fabrics for $15 and free shippping in 4" swatches :drop: then i can finger them (ok fondle as hastings says) and get a good idea what would work or wouldn't work.

thanks for the input!

The sampler price is better from exotic silks too. Check it out at http://www.exoticsilks.com/store/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=ES&Product_Code=5340#

I can give you the prices on any of their stuff that you may be interested in...

If your willing to ship to Canada I would love :cloud9: some Fabric dyed with the mandalas pattern, Knits or Wovens I would love both. I perffer Interlock over jersey though for knits. I'll be watching this thread as well :flowerkit

8mm is the perfect weight for belly dance veils. I made a veil of 8mm and i also made one from silk georgette. hth

hey mama...thank you for the info. :D but, i notice i can get lower prices on squares and scarves at dharma. so, i am curious...do you do the exotic silks b/c s/h is better? or maybe i get better prices at dharma b/c i always get 60 or more items and get the discounted price? hmmmmmm....

mikaylasmama, yes, i already do belly dance veils and most of the dancers around here actually prefer the 5mm weight, but i also like the 8mm weight for myself.

mina687, i would ship to canda....but can you tell me the difference (or post pics?) b/t interlock and jersey? i know jersey is like tee shirts, right?

thanks mamas!

I think that some are equal to their prices, the rest are less expensive even with the 60+ quantity for 8mm Habotai. Unless I am looking in the wrong place... ?????????? I want to be sure I am getting the best price, so if you can give me a link to where they cost less please do!

The yardage prices are for 54" wide - cut yardage. It would be less expensive if we were to do whole bolts, but that would be a 50yd minimum.

thanks mamas!

"The face looks more or less the same on all 3 fabrics -- they all have have small vertical ribs. Go to the back of the fabric and and gently pull the across the stretch. Interlock will look more or less the same on the face and back, jersey has a wavy perl pattern that runs perpendicular to the face rib. If you're still not sure, cut a piece from selvedge to selvedge, if it's jersey the cut edge will curl on itself, interlock and rib will lay flat."

I borrowed this from a site I frequent. Does this help make more sence? Either Interlock or Rib knit will do. Thanks so much for putting this together. I love your work :cloud9:
