I'm not native, but I have family that is that sent Kuspuks to my daughters as gifts when they were born. From what I know, a Kuspuk is worn over heavy winter clothing by Native Northern people. Since they must wear warm winter coats, the Kuspuks are their way of displaying colorful clothing -- they are purely decorative and are worn over layers of warm winter clothing just like we would wear a shirt. Another way to wear beautiful colors.
ETA: It's interesting to see OOOOOLLLD thread revived, lol. No idea where to find a pattern though :(

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~I am not sure how this works...but I have not submitted any photographs...I am Fairygrandmother to 5, three of whom are granddaughters. I live in Alaska...so I should be able to find a pattern...but so far have not...I came on line to do a search and stumbled upon this great site.
A kuspuk, (aka: quaspeq) is arctic-wear and is traditionally made from brightly coloured cotton, trimmed with rick-rack and bias bindings...(fancy ones are made from velveteen and trimed with fur and metalic braid). Traditionally they are worn over fur parkas, essentially functioning like an apron...keeping the fur clean. In the summer months kuspuks are worn more like a dress.
It is a loose pullover garment, with a sweatshirt-type "kangaroo pocket" on the belly of the "dress" which extends to just below the hip and often has a wide ruffle around the hem. I want to make dress-like kuspuks for my granddaughters...and may have to get busy and just draft a pattern on newspapers...Please let me know if anyone might have a link online to save me some time...I am a university student and just had my math final today!...Since I am on break from daily homework..I MUST get busy on other things! Thanks for any help...
Hi all,
I'm new here. I was googling "kuspuk pattern" in hopes of finding pattern sources for infants. One of the google links was this thread. I had to register to read it. Anyhoo, for what it's worth, there are two places I know of in Alaska that sell kuspuk patterns. The first is Black Elk Leather Bead and Stones, (907) 562-2703 and the other is Alaskan Apparel, (907)456-4549.
If the original poster is still around, I'm curious where she got her toddler pattern. Thanks!
I have to look and see where I got my pattern. I am sure there is a phone number on it. I need to sew some for my gals. I have the fabric cut out already. It is fun to see people who even know what a kuspuk is! (My DH is native AK)
Lovely work and an adorable model!
My pattern says Alaska Kuspuk by Lois- No phone number, but this addy
523 Second Ave.
Fairbanks, AK 99701
I also found this link- apparently you can buy a pattern at the UAF cooperative extension- Alaska Native Traditional Dress Resources (http://www.costumes.org/ETHNIC/1PAGES/AKRESOUR.HTM)
I will have to ask my sil who lives in Anchorage for some resources. The native ladies had a pattern that used the measurement of the arm span to make their own kuspuk w/o a store bought pattern.
Just saw the photo of your little girl in the adorable red kuspik. Where did you locate the pattern? I am a first time grandma, live in Alaska, and can not locate a pattern in order to make for my granddaughter. Thank you. barb
LOOK AT MY KUSPUK!!!
Hello,
I am trying to put together a kuspuk that I cut out from a pattern and I am having difficulty with the cuff's. Do you have any suggestions? It looks like you daughter's kuspuk doesn't have traditional cuffs, is that correct? Thanks for any help that you can give.
