View Full Version : How much do you tip for beauty services?

How much do you generally tip when you get your hair cut, wax job, manicure, pedicure, whatever other beauty treatments you may get? What do you normally tip? Do you do a certain percentage or a X amount depending on what service? I usually tip about 10 percent when I get my hair cut, and usually two dollars or so for my eyebrows being waxed (which is a little more than ten percent I suppose). Just wondered what the norm was. ;)

Hi Dawn! :) Around here, people tip 20% as a norm. I get my hair done by an owner of a salon and he refuses tips. There are two salons around me that does not want people tipping the stylists so I go to that one sometimes too. I pay about $40-$100 haircut. The services includes scalp treatment, shampooing, conditioning, parffin wax (for hands), massage your arms and hands while you get your hair cut, styled... and then they touch you up with make up (which I always say no, lol!)

I tip a flat 20% and round it up if it is between one dollar the the next dollar.
For example, I need to get my hair colored next week and it usually costs me about $105.....lets say that it cost $106.33.....then I'd tip $22.
The only services I get are hair trims and color.

my sister is a beautician and mostly lives off her tips! She said that if you work a job that makes money on tips (such as hairdresser, waitress, etc) you ALWAYS tip 20%. Because of her making me aware, I always tip that now too.
However she said the average used to be 10% and now is up to 15% so if you go anywhere that has the tip included (like parties of 8 or more) it is always 15% or more charged.
Also some places now have a tip total at the bottom, showing the total for 15% and the total for 20%.
Now if I think the service is HORRIBLE, then I leave 10% or less... shameless maybe, but... ;)

Hey, I dont think anyone should get a tip at ALL if they do a horrible job. I mean, they KNOW that their income relies on tips and if they do such a terrible job... why should they get paid? Maybe they should learn to earn their tips :)
I was stupid. YEARS ago, I went to get my hair done chin length. The guy goofed. He ever said "oops". He chopped off about 2in worth of hair up to my ear! He asked me if I wanted it cut all around that length. Ummm... NO! So I looked like a freak with only once piece of my hair cut that short. And can you believe that I actually TIPPED that guy? Shouldn't have. I should have gave ZERO. :)

If it's a so-so job? I do 10%. If it's a good or better one? 20%. Worst, awful, etc.? No tip...lol. Hasn't happened yet though. Luckily. LOL.
I typically do 15% at the nail salon though...sometimes 20% if I am really happy. :cloud9:

I try to put myself in other peoples shoes when calculating a tip. And I always tip 20% or more, bad service or not. :)
People are especially judgemental of their stylists. They're people just like you and me...they have families, bills, shop at the grocery store etc.
We make mistakes in our lives and the quality of our jobs haven't always been 100%. The service industry in this country is greatly populated by folks who are living "paycheck to paycheck", as do most Americans. Real folks just trying to get by.

Yes they are living paycheck to paycheck, and real folks just trying to get by... but there is no way I could honestly give someone a great tip even when they have done a lousy job. That is like telling them "You can give as bad service as you want and it doesn't matter". We had a waitress who basically took our order and nothing more. She didn't even deliver our food to us. Never came back except to give us our check. Does she really deserve a nice tip when she did *nothing* for us at all?
I don't really understand that really. I am understanding of people having bad days and all, but if it affects my nice and calm time away from the kids when dh and I are out to a date night... why should we pay even more money for crappy service. Might as well of just stayed home...
Want your tips... at least make sure you do your job... And if you DO screw up, don't act like it doesn't matter.

That's totally how I feel too. I had an absolutely horrible hair experience with my son getting his haircut once and I refused to give the lady a tip, and I know it pissed her off. But she yelled at him and refused to finish cutting his hair b/c he wouldn't sit still. I refused to pay for a full haircut and wouldn't tip her. LOL
And the more I think about it, I was wrong saying I do 10 percent, it does average between 15-20. I had a pedicure and manicure today and I tipped her a little more than 20 percent b/c she was soooo great! LOL For me it really depends on the service. If you do an ok job but ignore me the entire time, I'm less likely to tip you well. Same with resturaunts. I know these workers need their tips, but IMO if you're in a profession where you are working for tips, you need to have excellent customer service.

I tip 20% to the stylist plus $2-3 to the shampoo person, depending on how good they make me feel :rub:
Manicures and facials I also tip 20%, more on a facial if they do a really good job of cleaning my pores.

I feel like such an idiot!! I usually only give about 4-5 for a haircut and 5-8 for a perm!!! Now I am going to try to be more generous!

I totally understand!
I guess I'm partial to being more forgiving of bad service because I had worked in the service industry myself for many years.
I've had really crappy days. I've forgotten to refill a few drinks and bring extra rolls. And I've also had folks leave me bad tips for good service.
And then- I became a hairstylist! Now I'm a sahm. I loved my job and my clients. I have clients that come see at my home still. They always leave great tips even though I insist that they don't have to.
I'm sorry that girl yelled at your son. Wow. She shouldn't be doing childrens cuts if she can't deal with the squirmies! ;)

Honestly I'm amazed at how much many of you pay. Guess it's the area. I only pay $14 for a haircut at a family owned salon. I got my hair cut and highlighted on Monday and it only cost me $49. I don't tip her because she's the owner. Also, when I bring in all of the girls, she gives me a price break since we only take uo two appointment times. I admit that we are friends which helps, but she doesn't give me a huge price break. I didn't get one on my hair on Monday, though she did trim dd4's bangs for free while I was under the dryer.
I grew up going to a woman who had a business in her home. There was no need to tip her, though some did (which always surprised her). I was almost shocked to find out that you were to tip hairdressers. But like I said, I don't tip the owner and it's not expected.

In cosmetology I got a $20.00 tip just for the shampoo and scalp massage and it really made my day! so if the service is good I will tip alot however you do not mess with me when it comes to haircuts if they take too much off the tip is drasticly reduced. usually I tip $30-35 for shampoo haircut and blowdry, I color my own hair at home so Im not sure how much I would tip for that in a salon.

I tip 20% for salon services, 15% at restaurants and way way WAY less at the commissary. The baggers there work for tips and there's no way I am tipping them 15-20% of my grocery bill (someone mentioned always tipping 20% to people who live off tips which is why I'm mentioning the commissary). Ain't happenin'. I usually give them $2-5 depending on how much I buy. I figure it takes like 5-10 minutes to bag up my groceries so a slow estimate is they can do probably 5 orders an hour. That's $10-25 an hour...pretty good for bagging groceries IMHO.

ha. I give them a dollar lol. I mean really. After you add on our surcharge and then tip the bagger, we would be better off just to go to walmart...

Yeah no kidding. I had a friend in Norfolk whose daughter worked as a bagger and she made some serious cash so I don't feel the least bit cheap because I know they make good money. I worked as a bagger when I was a teenager and made like $6 an hour so they'll live. lol!

Funny story about the commissary in Norfolk.. ;) The first time I went there, their stupid credit card machines were down. All I had on me was my visa check card, no checks, nothing. So while they were ringing up my 300 dollars worth of groceries (seriously a ton, had to get EVERYTHING for our kitchen) DH ran down to the NEX to get money from the ATM. So he comes back and I pay, had to wait around for the bagger to FINISH bagging the next customers stuff, then she finally took mine out. We got to the car, she was putting everything in, I went to go over to get a couple bucks from DH as he was getting into the car and she was finishing. She thought I was getting into the car to leave. She looked at me and VERY rudely said... "where's my tip?" (or something to that effect) I was sooo annoyed, tired, and cranky by that point in the day I looked at her and very rudely said "well I was getting cash from my husband for you but since you just demanded a tip, I don't think I'll be giving you one" and got in the car! I normally tip them depending on how many bags I have though, so she would have gotten a nice tip. But geez if you're gonna be rude about it, sorry.. not happening. I'm so mean.. ;) Usually I end up tipping anywhere from 2-7 dollars depending on how much groceries I had that day. :)

do you have to have people bag your stuff at a commissary??? We hardly ever have baggers at our supermarkets. I prefer to do it myself anyhow.. but wow.. tipping your baggage people?? Ive never heard of that! Learn something new everyday.

I am so happy to see all of these responses!!! I'm a hairstylist. I do hair in my home (with the kids there- I literally have a playground in my basement to keep them busy). I had someone tell me once that they don't tip me because I get to keep all the cash from my haircuts. Grrrrr...... I still make LESS than minimum wage and that money goes towards raising my children and paying my bills. Every tip that I get is a blessing and very thankfully received!
BTW, I tip the owners of salons because they have to take much of their money and pay for rent, electricity, products (which are EXPENSIVE), etc and it can be very very expensive.
Thanks for treating your stylists right.

I tried to insist on tipping the owner of the salon and he just simply REFUSED it. He got upset when I offered... and said he owns the place and doesn't need the tips. But it's at an upscale salon so maybe he doesn't have to worry about it? I dunno how it all works but I always offered.
You guys just made me make an appointment for Monday night for my haircut! LOL! And I'm going back to him ;)

Don't forget to tip the person who cleans your hotel/motel room!
I worked this job through college alongside many single mom struggling with minimum wage, no benefits, etc. They have to clean up your pubic hair  I know most people don't even think about it.
