just a quick question - Do snaps melt in the high heat of the dryer (hottest setting). When applying snaps is it better to press on the firm side or err on the less firm side. I've had one snap come off a diaper in the second time it's been washed. I'm just wondering if it melted since the back of the socket looks a bit melted. Should I dry the dipes on medium/high instead or did I just not press firm enough. I did the "stick a nail between the snap & fabric" test to know if I should press again but maybe the fabric shrunk because I can now fit my nail between the fabric and snap (snugly).

I never had a snap melt in the dryer and I always dried my diapers on hot.

so could I be pressing too hard or not hard enough? I lean on the press (with it on the floor) with all my weight. Thanks for answering though - I've seen your beautiful dipes.

BTW, these are the PF/PUL AIO combos.

I'd bet it wasn't pressed hard enough. I've never had one melt either. The part that looks melted is where it's been pressed. :) How many layers are you going through? I have to go through at least 2 or the snaps are too loose. HTH!

phew this is good to know since I'm narrowing it down. It's going through one layer of PUL and about 8 layers of birdseye (the prefold). From both of your comments it sounds to me like I need to press harder.

but maybe your layers are *too thick* and you need long prong snaps? If the prong is not getting flattened into a nice flat disc (look in the middle of your snap) then you either need to press harder or get a longer prong.

One word of caution, though, on pressing harder...
If you press too hard you will crack the snap. In fact, pressing really, really hard is one way to remove a misplaced snap!

That sounds like too many layers for the snap to go through. Can you alter the design so that it doesn't have to go through the prefold and then reinforce the pul with something?

okay I think I do need a long pronged snap. My snaps do look smushed and like a disk but not as raised above the socket as my wool covers. Where can I get long pronged snaps?
