View Full Version : Hey, so did I ever tell you that Chris isn't REALLY drinking my breastmilk?

This whole almost 16 months, he must have just been pretending! I had NO idea!!
Really! This is what my doctor told me! You know that doctors do know absolutely everything about every individual persons bodies right??
I shouldn't have gone back.. but I guess I was concerned. I shouldn't be, I should trust my instincts.. which told me there was nothing wrong..
back up..
9 months Chris had a well baby checkup. He was 21 lbs.
12 months, Chris had his year checkup. He was 20lbs and some oz. He lost 9oz from his 9 month appt. In those three months, he had started solids and had started to walk- and climb- a lot. I HAD to make an appt to come back in 3 months to check on his weight, since it's not good to lose weight (unless you are me. :D )
15 months, we go back. Chris has gained 6 oz. Still not good.. but at least he's gaining. (doctors exact words) Are you still breastfeeding? You know he's not really drinking the milk anymore. :shake: No doctor.. I didn't know that! Wow.. was that published somewhere? Hmph. All those times, that I wake up in the middle of the night.. and I feed him, and I can hear him swallowing, and I can feel the let down STILL, you mean it's all in my head?? Wow. Who wudda thunk.
So now I have to go back in 3 more months to make sure he's still gaining weight. Yes I know he's gaining weight slowly. I just don't see HOW. he nurses like he's a newborn still. He eats everything under the sun. Maybe there IS something wrong. He is healthy and happy though.. is just as active as my 5 year old- running around the yard, climbing up the slide, trying to climb up the ladder to the bunk beds. *lol*
Ugh. Anyhow.

LOL so what is he doing with it if he isn't drinking it?
My Jane is a tiny one too. BUt she is never still. She is going full speed all day long. Burns up all the calories she eats. And she eats all day too.
I wonder why some Drs just don't see that in some kids.

Our ped. expressed some concern at 9 mo. visit b/c Kelby hadn't gained much weight that time & she's only 3 % on charts. Concern b/c babies don't gain very much after activity kicks in. Asked me to offer meat at every meal if I'm not opposed & to bf at least 5 times a day. Kelby was VERY active early on.
Went in at 10 months for ear check - she'd gained 10 oz.
At 1 yr visit she'd gained 1.5 since 9 mo.
Anyway, DR happy as she's gaining small amounts but staying on her curve.
So I'd ask for another DR in the practice if you have other options.

Crimony! He must be spitting it back out when you're not looking.
All of my kids lost some weight when they started walking. Your doc would have freaked at my girls. They were born weighing between 9 and 10 lbs each and at a year only weighed 18lbs. They must not have been drinking all the breastmilk I produced for them.
Sheesh. What a crackpot. I'm so glad our family doc wasn't like that.
I'm glad you're not falling for his line.

Yeah Chris was 10lbs at birth.. I don't think 20lbs at 1year is that tiny anyhow???? I mean it's not like my 5 year old who was 20lbs at 4mths or anything! but still within normal weight!
Thank you for making me feel better. :)

Well, if it makes you feel any better, my girls are all between 40-60%tiles now and they're 3, 5 and 7. How big were you and dh as kids? Both of us were small and our doc took that into consideration.
What's funny is my eldest was 20lbs at 4 mos, too! If he hadn't been so big I would have questioned the quality of my bmilk the the girls. My girls were just a lot more active than he was.

Your babe sounds a bit on the same track as my dd (except that she was 16 lbs at 12 months). But, her ped rocks! And, I'm continually reminded of that every time I read a post like this.
We, as first time parents were a bit worried, and he said, "naahh, she's the perfect example of the good breastmilk does."

We had the ssame issue at our 1 year check up. Ds had been in the 95% for weight from birth to 6 mo. At 6 mo, he started crawling and never stopped moving after that. He walked at 8 months. And started eating solids around them as well (he still nurses like a fiend!). During the 6 month period between 6 mo and a year, he went from the 95% to the 25%. He lost a few ounces and just hasn't gained anything. The dr was saying he was a bit worried and told me to start giving him things like carnation instant breakfast (we try to eat as organically and naturally as possible - I was not giving ds that, lol!) to make him gain more weight. We had to schedule a weight check for a month later. I called the morning of the check and cancelled it. I know there is nothing wrong with him/ He eats well, nurses a ton - he is just a little monkey who is never still! But I suppose peds have to worry - it's their job, lol!

This is just my opinion, but I would be lookin for a new Dr. What a moron, of course they lose weight when they become more active. And what the #### does he think the baby is doing with the milk...saving it up in his cheek for a rainy day. He sounds healthy to me, and you as the mom probably have a better idea of whether he is thriving. I would be skippin that moron appt. Of course...i'm not a big Ped fan, but that's another whole thread all together.

What a quack!
My friend had a doc get all concerned about her dd not gaining (or maybe she even lost weight.) The little one had started walking and DUH! was slimming down, plus, she's just not a biant baby, YK? I had to laugh thinking about it just the other day because her dd actually has a bit of pudge around the wrists and is obviously more than fine. :p

snort. I actually laughed when I read this. Thank you. That was very funny and right on.
Sounds like that ped is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay off base. clueless. :shake: Medical school students are NOT educated much at all about breastfeeding. It shows in many cases. As a nurse, I can tell you of many stories of docs sabotoging (not necessarily on purpose) breastfeeding relationships. :tear:
In order to support breastfeeding, they need to specifically seek out knowledge, whether by experience (themselves or their wives) or by learning.
We've had the same struggles and worries w/our youngest. He was just under 20# at 1 yr and they were all worried about his weight.

This is why we skipped well baby check-ups. I knew my baby was growing because he outgrew his clothes and I weighed him from time to time. It is so normal for babies to slow down in growth when they start moving around. Recently, we returned to the first family doctor we had when we first moved here. We left the practice mostly because our insurance doesn't accept him as a PPO so we have to pay out of pocket, but IMO it is worth it because he is such a great family doctor. I have never found a pediatrician who lines up with where we are insofar as health care, but perhaps you can keep looking for family doctors - word of mouth from people who are close to your ideals in this area might be a good way to start.

That's so stupid, I'm sorry you had to go through it! My little guy had a time that he didn't gain much weight, and our ped. told me to *think* about not breastfeeding him at night anymore. There's a lot they don't learn in medical school I guess. You just tell little Chris to hold still and have a donut or two, then he'll get nice and plump for the doctor! ;)

Willow's first ped said almost the exact same thing. So...we fired him...and then stopped going to well baby visits...
She just turned 2 and still isn't quite to 25lbs yet...or maybe just at. But she's definitely growing and all that jazz...Why do those jerks in the white coats think they are the be all and end all of knowledge when it comes to everyone. Whatever it is...take a pill...and across the board, it'll help. Yeah...whatever HA. :)
Sorry you had such a frustrating time with the Doc. :(
Peace,
Jenn

My little man was alway really small too. I had this one Doc from birth to 6 months old who would ALWAYS make me come in for weighins because he was tiny, and at the 6 month one he told me that I was starving my child!!! Yeah that's what a first time mom really needs to hear. My new doc is pretty nice about it, every now and then we still need to go in for weigh ins but not as much, our new doc says " you need to get this kid a butt." and says well, he's got some meat on his legs, he's just tiny that's all. So I if I were you I'd get a different doc. Im sure that there's a better one out there. :)
George Carlin said something to the effect like, You know right now there could be someone out there who is THE WORST doctor in the world! And you could be having an appointment with him tomorrow! lol

No kidding. When I started having milk supply problems, the first doctor we went to told me to give my DD formula instead of breastfeeding every other feeding and said it wouldn't affect my supply!!! Then she told me that I was starving her because I hadn't started giving her formula. Why do you think I came to see you, moron?! To make sure it WAS a milk supply problem and not something else!
Or the time when I was telling a NP that Eliza wasn't getting enough milk at 9m (we suppliment, much to my dismay) and she said it wasn't a supply problem, that some children are satisfied with a quick nurse at that age. Um...considering we JUST SAID that she was taking 8oz of organic formula after nursing, I don't think she's satisfied!
Sometimes I wonder if doctors (and sometimes nurses) just recite medical text without ever thinking about what's coming out of their mouth.

i got the same thing going on now. J.D. was a little small at 9 months at 17.5 lbs and 19 even at 1 year. But they didn't even consider his height. He is only 27 3/4 in long so he is proportionate and healthy. He started walking 2 weeks before his check up so I suspect that is why. Anyway, dr said he wasn't real concerned but wants to see us in 6 weeks for a weight check.

My 2.5 year old is 26 lbs. I'm so glad we don't so well visits. He's only been to the dr. once in his life, for a sick visit. I would not put up with this dr. anymore Cheryl. I'm sure he's just fine. My first 2 babies were 20 lbs at 4 months. They are built differently than Andrew is. He's little all around. He's a perfectly happy/healthy child who does just what his siblings do, as it sounds like your ds is doing as well. That's probably why he's not gaining so much.

i thought for a minute i was losing my mind because i kept saying (out loud, to dh) "wait a minute --- she's had another baby since chris. she must be talking about luke and just keeps getting the name wrong. :o  -- then i look at the date and realize that neither one of us has lost it. WHEW!

I hear ya on that. Doc's can sometimes talk out their..... you know what's.
My now 5 year old, nursed until he was 4. Ate solids of course like a regular kid. But he started life so big they thought something was wrong with him and kept doing PKU every hour to 2 hours for 2 days just to be sure nothing was wrong. They all came out fine. He was topping the scale until he started walking when his percentile started dropping. Then around his 2nd b-day, he stopped gaining weight. For 2 years he didn't gain a single pound. And barely anything still now that he is 5. But he is getting taller. So I don't know why, but I feed him healthy foods and he sure does know how to pack away the junk food when he gets it. Heck, during a 6 month period he grew 3 inches. So he has to be getting nutrients somewhere. lol. Yet, he only weighs 33 lbs.
It's the same thing with my 2 year old now. He was a big chuncky boy and now I am watching the weight drop off him. This time I am not much worried about it. He eats more than his brother did at this age too. Plus, he gets more exercise because he has someone to chase around and bother. :monkeydan But his weight gain is slowing down too.
I also look at my family history and my husbands. My sisters, brother and myself were all very skinny growing up. I do mean VERY! And we ate alot! I know I did. Up until I hit puberty, I was about 80 lbs. So I think my kids are just following in the high metabolism family tradition.
And I fully expect the same thing to happen with my newest baby boy too.
It is a weird thing though. To have my 2 year old nursing after the baby was born, sharing the same milk, and to see the baby get fat as heck, and my 2 year old doesn't gain a pound. Since I tandem nursed with my now 5 year old and 2 year old when a few years ago, I have gotten to see it happen 2x. It's weird to see it happen, but atleast I know my milk is fattening up someone.

My ds is 26mths, and weighs 23 pounds. He has always been tiny, and breastfed since day one.Thankfully his Dr,told me to breastfeed as long as i can because he is getting everything he needs from me.He is a very PICKY eater and will have one bite and be done with it.My Dr. is a women with 3 children and is breastfeed herself !!!!
Im still concerned with his weight. 23 pounds seems really tiny after reading all the other baby weights posted.
(hes happy.healthy and running and climbing like crazy.)
Seems perfect to me !! LOL!!
