I need to replace the headliner in the truck. Has anyone done this? Any suggestions or tips? For some reason, I'm feeling kind of intimidated by it.

OH, please ask him.

We have a Chevy pickup that we need to sell. We've had it about 10 years. You prob didn't see it, it's usually parked in the back yard drive. With the new Prius, I need to knock off a vehicle from our insurance.

My dh has done a few of ours but its been a while so I'm going on memory here and just watching, not doing much

You have to remove some of the molding around the top. I'm thinking around the windshild and the back window. There is a cardboard piece that lines the roof and you take that off. Then, take off the old stuff and clean it off. There will be foam and stuff so clean it the best you can.
Then, measure out your headliner but make sure it is larger than the cardboard that way you make sure it is all covered and you don't end up with a bald corner!
You'll need two people for the next part. (that is why I was watching!) You have to spray the cardboard well with spray adhesive. Follow the directions on the can. I think we had to wait a few seconds or something and then you quickly place the headliner fabric over the adhesive and smooth. This has to be done quickly before it sets. then let it sit or whatever the can says and then you put everything together again.

Its not too bad and doesn't take too long. Getting the roof part off and back on takes the most time. I think we bought our headliner fabric at Hancocks and they have the right spray also. I don't remember the type we used.

HTH!

Okay, Rob says he got headliner fabric at Joann's (of all places, lol). They have it in several colors, it is foam backed.

You need a philips head screwdriver. You need to remove everything in the headliner (visors, lights etc.). Remove all the plastic trim surrounding the headliner so you can get it out. Sometimes there are metal clips holding it up, but usually it will come loose when you start to take off the trim and you can see if anything is holding it up still. If there is a light you need to disconnect the wires. Scott is handy and can do this easily.

So, you take out the headliner piece and use it to figure out how much you need buy. You need one can of spray adhesive - something that can handle high heat since the sun beats on the roof. Scotch makes Super 77 or something. Try an auto part or hardware store for this. 3M makes a headliner adhesive but Rob couldn't find it.

Just like the PP said, you have to scrape off all of the disintigrating foam and glue from the previous board that you took out so the adhesive has something to stick to. Use some kind of stiff bristle brush and get as much off as you can. The spray adhesive is a contact adhesive, so you spray, wait a little bit and stick the headliner down. Rob says to lay the whole big thing down, then roll back half and spray it, wait, then stick it down. Then do the other half the same way. He also says to pay attention to how the edges are done when you take it down, and try to put it back the same way. IOW if it's wrapped around the edge and glued for an inch or so, do that and then trim off the excess. If there is a light hole, you cut an X and fold to the inside. Rob says it will be pretty obvious how they did it when you take it down.

Whichever side of trim you took off first, you might have broken a clip or two. Rob says that you can borrow a clip or two from the other pieces when you knew how to take them off, lol. You don't need every single clip on every piece, as long as it's up solidly. Then, installation is the reverse of removal. If you break the board, you can use duct tape to fix it since it can handle the heat. If there are electrical wires, you can reattatch with duct tape also.

Okay I think that's it. HTH! You can call of course if you want to talk to him about it :D

We had a saggy headliner in my van because someone (ok, I did it, lol) left the sunroof open and it rained. They make these little button things that will hold it back up, it looks kind of like an upholstered headboard when you get done :D OK, so that's my uber cheap way of dealing w/ a 15 yo minivan that has bigger problems than the headliner (it'll be running again in a few wks though, woohoo).
