I think this is my first post in this forum...Hello! :) It was recommended that I post a link to my thread on the Market board since you all are such gurus at this. So, I'd really appreciate it if you would check it out and give any advice you can think of: http://www.amitymama.com/vb/showthread.php?t=233661

This time I read your link. Could you be a little more specific about what exactly you would like help with? Is it recipes you are looking for or Information on nutrition in genreal?

This time I read your link. Could you be a little more specific about what exactly you would like help with? Is it recipes you are looking for or Information on nutrition in genreal?Well, I think I know enough about nutrition as in book knowledge, I just don't know how to transfer it to actually cooking.

I guess I mostly need to know how to eat the healthiest we can, but with simple, low-cost recipes. I have a crockpot, so I'm VERY interested in recipes for that. Yeah, I think I'm really after recipes w/very detailed ingredient information (shopping lists would be terrific). Like I wrote in my other thread, I work best with step-by-step instructions.

What I really know is that DH *HAS* to lose weight to stay in the Air Force. And we both need to lose weight for our health. Plus, we have a 2yr old DS who we need to raise healthier than we are now :(

I hope that makes more sense! lol

Thank you,
Antonia

Well my first suggestion would be to type in the words crockpot recipes in your search window. You will find tons of websites with recipes.

Second I know how hard it is to go on a "diet" and give up certain foods. It reall does have to be a lifestyle change rather than a "Diet" Try not eating wheat, corn dairy and sugar for a while. I did this and was able to lose about 80lbs. I ate everything else and did not limit myself to a specific portion. I just made sure I ate when I was hungry and stopped when I was full.

Also drink a full glass of water before each meal fill up on veggies rather than starchy foods. Eat more fruit. Try eating only fruit for breakfast.

Go for a walk, exercise it will help speed up your metabolism.

You can change any ingredient in most recipes for a healthy version. Add more veggies to each meal.

If you are making rice add diced carrots, onion and celery. If you are making eggs add sautee'd onion and bell peppers.

Make more vegetable soups. Make sure to eat breakfast as it speeds up your metabolism. Make sure you are sleeping at least 8 hours since that also speeds up your metabolism. Make sure you don't skip any meals.

I will also give you an example of my grocery list you can copy and paste and take it with you then next time you go shopping I buy all organic most of the time but you don't have to. Keep in mind I do not eat wheat, corn, dairy , sugar, red meat or pork

brown rice
basmati rice
black beans
pinto beans
chicken
eggs
rice milk
rice flour
veggies all kinds, pick your families faves
seafood
potatos
garlic
various herbs and spices
fruit again all kinds pick your faves
olive oil
coconut oil
earth balance spread
rice noodles
tinkyada spaghetti noodles
tinkyada rotini
coconut milk
peanut butter
almond butter
rice crackers
nuts various kinds
quinoa
avacados
oats
granola fruit juice sweetened with no added honey
I also buy goats milk products for the rest of my fam since they eat differently than I do

So for them I also buy

goat yogurt
goat cheese

I am sure I buy much more than that but it is all I can think of for now

The book Fit for Life changed the way I eat about 15 years ago and I never went back, maybe give that a read-most libraries have it.
Try the thrifty forum they are always running recipe threads.
Think about what you would eat if you were buying prepacked food, and just make it yourself. Can you take a cooking class or workshop somewhere? Even sign up for a teen cooking class as that may be more geared to beginners.
good Luck, don't be afraid, just try,
Buy a bag of onions and start sauteing (sp) (that's a fancy way of saying frying. lol

The flat easiest first change is add a can of beans to just about everything. One can a meal, find a way to put it in nearly everytihng. Even hamburger helper/tuna helper, if that is your thing.

The second is make a broth soup a first dinner course, or a salad. By broth, I mean a can of broth, and a chopped green onion, by salad- lettuce/ tomatoes/whatever and a hand done oil/vinegar or oil/lemon juice dressing- a clear dressing. IE oil/vinegar/salt/pepper/ and spices, if you wish. Toss it, not drown it.

Cook up a box of barley, or a bag of brown rice, ssave it up,a nd serve it over a quarter of a plate, and then mess with the rest of it. A serious diet would involve a third to a half of a plate.

Do fish on Fridays, and red beans and rice on Mondays. It's hard to gain weight that way.

Change a little at a time, so you don' t buy everything "healthy" and then order pizza every day for a week.

Take lunch to work. Sandwich, bean salad, fruit, something else (salty is nice, carrots are nice) and drink water. Drink coffee rather than soda pop.

Make dessert fruit and cheese, or fruit and yogurt, or fruit and nuts.

Take a long walk with DH, and talk about what's going on, every day. Make it something special.

good lcuk
