Okay DD has become obsessed with playdoh. And we are getting a lot of "gray" playdoh. :lol: Well this stuff is expensive and I like making it instead. But she likes colors not white. :)

So what do you use to color it?

Does koolaid or food coloring stain their hands?

I use either Wilton icing dyes (and a teeny bit goes a loooong way!) or powdered tempra paint. Both can stain the hands if used in large amounts, but more so the Wilton's.

I'm a BIG fan of kool-aid playdough. The color does not come off on hands, it's nice and bright, and smells nice. And the recipe I use isn't super salty and isn't as drying to hands as some other recipes

* 1 cup flour
* 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
* 1 package unsweetened Kool-Aid
* 1/4 cup salt
* 2 tablespoons cream of tartar
* 1 cup water

Mix flour, salt, cream of tartar and Kool-AidŽ in a medium pot. Add water and oil. Stir over medium heat 3 to 5 minutes. When mixture forms a ball in pot, remove. Knead until smooth. Put in a plastic bag and refrigerate.

ps...it still works fine without the cream of tartar :)

I made Kool Aid dyed play dough a few weeks ago and love it. I made grape, so my DS has been playing with his purple play dough and loving it. It's held up really well, too.

The cream of tartar helps keep germs from growing in the playdough. I found this out the hard way last year :eek:

So, if you double the recipe, do you have to double the Cream of tartar?

That stuff is expensive!!

We made some purple playdough with gold sparkles and it dyed our counter tops and hands. I just used food coloring. I am going to have to buy the kool-aid and try it out.

Also, if your child isn't allergic to nuts, there's a wonderful and delicious recipe for Peanut Butter Playdough. It was always a favorite of my daughter when she was in the playdough stage. (She's 16 now!)

I put a few drops of tea tree oil in ym kool aid dough and didn't put in any cream of tartar. Kept for MONTHS. I just added a few drops in as I was mixing it up.

If you want to go the natural way, you can use spirulina for green, beet root power for dk pink, and tumeric for golden yellow. I used them all the time when dd was younger. I also put EO in, such as lavender, peppermint, tea tree and lemon.

THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH! Ds and I just made up two colors of this and we have had a blast! Very fast and easy enough that my 3yo could help do it.

we made koolaid playdough two weeks ago with no cream of tartar. We have orange, green, purple and red.
i can't for the life of me get blue tho - which koolaid flavor will give us blue??
and is it ever possible to get yellow??

In using koolaid to color wool, I've found that I need to double or triple the amount of lemonade used to make yellow (ditto when using lemon lime to make green - if you want bright green you need to double up). There is a blue koolaid flavor (berry blue punch?)

Also, know that generally speaking flavor aid works just as well (and is usually cheaper).
