Alex will be attending ½ day kindergarten next year. Seeing as he is special needs & will be in a class of about 20 children with 1 teacher & 1 aide for only 2½ hrs a day including being pulled out for therapy, I think I need to "homeschool" him during his off-school hours.

He has been in pre-school for 3 yrs, and should have started kindergarten this year according to his age. He was definately not ready academically or socially, so he stayed in pre-school an extra year. Its the public school's pre-school, which is excellent (has a lottery system). He has really come a long way, but still needs OT, PT & Speech.

What affordable homeschool program can I use with him? Something simple & easy to understand as his major issues are comprehension & retrieval. I may start over the summer for about an hour a day 3-4 days a week, then about an hour or so 5 days a week once school starts in the fall.

He can write his own name, write mom & recognizes his name, his brother's name, most letters & some numbers.

I have never been pro homeschooling or unschooling, but I think it will be a good supplement for us.

TIA!

Are you just looking for something fun to do with him to help him with comprehension and "putting it all together," or something more "schoolish"?

If you're just looking for some fun activities based on comprehension, perhaps you could consider Five In A Row. You read the same story every day for 5 days in a row (hence the name!) and it has ideas for many different activities to do in different subjects to go along with the book. We've only done a couple of the lessons, but Justin (4) remembers a lot of what went on in the stories. We recently read a Country Mouse/City Mouse story that took place in Paris and he saw the Eiffel Tower in one of hte pictures and said "Hey, Madeline lives there!"

Good luck, mama!

You might want to look at Sonlight's PreK. It's all reading to your child good books. Might be worth a looksie. Even though it says PreK, it would be good for the retrieval and comprehension. We are using it this coming ear for Adam who is a typical K age student... but adding in phonics and K math for him. Lauren will also listen in to it and she will be 3.5 - 4.

Oh, and your other ds could be there participating at the same time, without it being a distraction (as younger kids can be when trying to work with older ones... sigh).

I love SL preschool... but it is all reading books. And some long ones, too. Check out SL's site for a list of the books, then check them out of the library to see if he can handle them (only because you say comprehension is an issue). There's a SL yahoo group for SL Preschool, and she has made a FABULOUS schedule, some think superior to the SL IG, using the SL Books. It starts you with the easiest stories, and moves gradually to the harder, longer books. That might be a way to go for you. We're not doing it yet, but I'm thinking aobut it... I dind't find it until recently, and we're already on week 9 of the SL IG.
