"This hat has 2 pattern pieces. Newborns heads can be from about 13-15-1/2 inches, so I try to make them about 15, figuring they will be a little big, or stretch to fit bigger heads.

The hat piece is shaped kind of like a hershey's kiss. The hat piece measures 8" on the bottom, and about 11 inches long, cut 2. The band measures 7&1/2 inches long, and 5" wide, place one end on fold, and cut 1. So, when you open it up you will have a strip that measures 5" x 15". If you don't have enough fabric to cut the band on the fold, that's fine, just make sure you add 1/2" more for seam allowance.

Put the hat pieces right sides together and stitch or serge. I start at the wide end, and stitch to the point, and then do the other side the same way. Then stitch the band ends, right sides together. If you band was in 2 pieces, then stitch both seams. I use about 1/2" seam allowance.

Take on edge of the hat band, and bring it up to the other edge, so that the wrong sides are together, and the right sides are facing out, making sure the raw edges are even.

Then stitch around the raw edges, stretching the hat band to fit, if you need to.

Notice that the serged / sewn seam is on the outside of the hat. Now, turn the band upwards to cover the seam.

Tie a knot in the top of the hat. I find it easiet to figure out how much hat I need for the head, then sort of twist the fabric, make a loop and pull the point through. Some fabric is thinner and stretchier and is easier (rib knits for instance) and some is heavier (like velour) and is more difficult. This is like the knot used in making the knotty dolls for those familiar with that pattern."

I find the funky shape top easier to tie than a straight cone.
