I use cloth tp (guess it's not really tp...but whatever). I wanted to ask those who use it...how they have it 'stored'.
Do you have a basket with fresh wipes? Do you have a small 'trash can' nearby to put used wipes in?
Just trying to get an idea for what I can do.

I have a basket by the toilet. You can put it on the back of the toilet on the tank, or hang it on the wall-there are half/flat backed baskets for this. I know they have them at Cost Plus. Then I have a hanging PUL bag on the door knob of the linen closet right next to the toilet. It is the same that I use for the diapers. That works for us because of the way the room is set up.
I was thinking-one of the stainless(or other colors/types) foot pedal cans would be great-you could get a pul liner(a couple) for lining it and then you are hands free for tossing the wipe in.
We only have paper TP for dh(lol) and guests. Dd's and I use the cloth for everything. I love it! SInce I am washing dipes anyway it is no big deal.

For the clean wipes we have a basket with a flip top that I got at the thrift store. (about the size of a small bathroom garbage can).
And for the used ones we have a large metal foot petal flip top can that I got at Target. When you open the lid there is a plastic bucket liner inside with a handle. On wash day I just pull the handle and take the bucket to the washer and dump it in. Works great!

When I used cloth TP a few yrs ago (I miss it), I had a plastic bin on the toilet tank top with the wipes & a small spray bottle of water with a little Dr. B's in it (shook before each use). I kept a small diaper pail (one of those fisher-price diaper genie knock-offs that a mainstream friend gave me) under the sink.
I just washed the wipes (I had a lovely assortment of flannel, knit & sherpa) with my dipes.

This is something I know I could do......but my family said NO WAY, WE DRAW THE LINE AT TOILET PAPER!! Especially after watching Frontier House on DVD last week....my family all looked at me when they saw the cloth rags for "toilet paper" and they must have seen the glean in my eye and they all said "NO MOM!"
Sigh...............
Maybe I could use it for myself.
Exactly how do you set it up? I'd think you'd want some kind of water/liquid to wet them? What size did you sew up the wipes? Basically share your how's and present your case for using cloth TP??

I don't have baby wipes around anymore.....babies no more in this house. [bittersweet]
Anyway, about what are the dimensions of a cloth baby wipe? Can any fabric work? I have scads of scrap fabrics......probably some is a blend. (aka not all cotton)
What do you do when you accidentialy (sic) throw it in the toiled? Go fishing for it? (Blech!!)
I do like the idea of moistening them somehow............If I do this, it will probably just be me.
Also, when we had babies and used cloth, I never rinsed the diapers but did soak them in the pail and then pour in all the pail water and BM right into the washing machine...is that how you do the cloth TP? Boy, it has been a long time since I washed a load of diapers.

I have regular toilet paper for dh and for guests.
The cloth baby wipes i have are either 8x8 or 4x8...some are flannel, some sherpa, some terry, some velour...so a mix. All of them are two ply.
I can't remember if I have accidently thrown one in the toilet...but yeah...i would guess you'd fish it out. oops.
I just throw them in the diaper pail now or in the washing machine to wash with the next load. I don't soak any of my diapers. They are just in a pail with a liner. (There is really hardly anything on a cloth wipe compared to a diaper.)

I've been sewing cloth TP wipes for myself the last week, I'm making cutting them about 7x7 and they're ending up a bit smaller. I'm doing velour on one side and super soft flannel on the other. I'm thinking of just doing a PUL bag, I figure people would mistake the flip top stainless steel can (which I'd rather use) as a regular garbage can.

We've been 100% cloth for over a year now. I sometimes put out tp for guests but usually forget & they have to either ask or figure out FBW themselves.
Our FBW's are about 3x5, double layer of flannel simply serged together. DD does have a few "special ones" that a firend of mine made. However I found that I like them thinner & smaller than most people.
We have a small bin on the back of the toilet with the fresh wipes and a small bucket/garbage can next to the toilet. The bathroom is small enough that you can wet the wipe from the sink if you want. Wipes get washed by themselves (no more diapers) when ever we run out. Currently we have how ever many could be made out of 2 yards of fabric.
Honestly, most people say that FBW are gross or something like that but there are numerous health benifits to them. Look at the fact that so many companies now make wet disposable wipes. This is just the eccological version.

Chloe,
That is a EXCELLENT point!
I'm going to ponder this one more. I may be the only one who uses them (at first) but I may just dig out my fabric stash and serge some up.
I need to get a PUL bag...what mamas do you know of who sew them for cheap? Or better yet, somewhere for me to purchase PUL.

I do it for myself and my dss prefer to use it too. I just use ds's wipes and wet them and then throw them in with his diapers. I dont know what I will do once he is all potty learned because I can't immagine running the washing machine for one small load of wipes. Do you put them in with your regular wash ever or do you all wash them seperately (those who don't have diapers around anymore)

I second this question!!!! We don't have anyone in cloth diapers anymore and I only use my cloth pads monthly...........
If you do wash them w/regular wash, what do you do them with? Towels?

Hi~
When we started using cloth tp my dd was still using diapers to poop, so the can would get full fairly quickly. Now she uses the toilet exclusively, so I just run a load of wipes only when we have about 10 more left. I probably end up running a load about every 4-5 days. It is just my dd and I that use them. I would like to make a few more and just wash them once a week.
Dh won't use them, so we do keep regular tp on hand for him and guests. I don't discuss it with guests and I am guessing many of them don't know because the basket for clean ones has a lid and so does the metal foot petal can for used ones. I have the used can behind the door in an extra storage space so it's not that noticeable. I have made sure that the garbage can is in a noticeable spot as i don't want guests mixing them up.
To give you an idea of how many we go through, I just went and counted and we have about 75 total. I am surprised by the number, I would have guessed we had about 30 if I had not counted. We also use them for other things in the bathroom...blowing noses, rags for wiping out the sink, toothpaste spills, etc.
I started out with probably about 30 and found I was having to wash them too often, so I have just made more when I had the right fabric. Mainly I found the fabric at the thrift stores, cutting up old pajama pants and heavy knits. I really like the flannel ones, but my dd likes the heavy knits better. I feel even better about them if the fabric is recycled from something else. The oldest ones we have used for about 18 months, and they are just fine.
To wash, I just dump them into the washer with a scoop of my homemade laundry detergent and a few splashes of vinegar. I do them on the smallest load setting for the longest agitiation time, warm wash/cold rinse. I let it fill and agitate for a few minutes to dissolve the soap and then turn it off and let it soak for at least an hour, turn it back on and let it finish. That's it. They come out clean. Of course, some are stained, but we don't worry about that.
Hope this helps!

Christy,
Hey, what is your homemade laundry detergent recipe?
That (and auto dishwashing detergent, and fabric drying sheets) are the only cleaners I am not making myself and I'd like to.
I'll start another thread if you would post your recipe there.

Not to give yall to much info but I have notcied that my hemeroid is much better using cloth than with TP. It's just generally cleaner down there YK. No paper fuzzies. Also since we have a hig raw diet stools are softer & there is more to clean up. TP just can't cut it! Plus DD doesn't get any "skid-marks" when using cloth.
I wash mine in the smallest load usually by themselves. Sometimes though I toss in the towel that we use as a bath mat. I try to avoit that though since the FBW's get stuck all over the towel & it's just a real pain! I'd have to guess we have over 75 or so.

This might be the ticket to getting dh to try cloth wipes. He's got a hemeroid that is bothering him. I know he would like them so much better than paper. He loves cotton everything, so if I used some soft flannel or velour I bet he'd think they were super soft. Anything would be softer than the softest tp. I mentioned it once and he wasn't to keen on the idea, but I love using them.

FBW? Stands for...???
We call them flannel butt wipes or FBW's for short.
You know my DP was a little weired out by them at first but he adjusted. Well that and I told him getting TP was going to be his job if he wanted it. Low and behold we ran out of TP and he didn't get any more. Then when he needed something the FBW's were there & he has been converted.
Plus if you think about it it's more saitary. You're *washing* not *wiping*.
For the person who wonders about accidentally dropping a wipe in the toilet, we've never had that problem. I actually have the opposite problem with DD (who's always used FBW). I have to tell her to put regular TP in the toilet when we are out.

Well, I was not planning on this when I first read this thread but your (meaning all of you) points make sense to me.
I spent yesterday using up some flannel scraps and some diaper flannel that I never made into diapers making wipes. My 15 yr old son was home (he broke his arm and had to stay home a couple days) and he of course thinks I'm nuts, but my family already says that so no biggie. *lol* He was cracking all kinds of jokes, of course. I used up some scooby doo flannel to make some and I heard all kind of variations on "Scooby-Dooby-Poo!!!", and he decided to call my wipes "Tree Hugger Toilet Paper". He also said if I ask him to use it, he is buying his own toilet paper from the store.
My dh comes home and sees the stack of cloth squares and stopped in his tracks and said something along the lines that he won't use them either....as did everyone else. *lol*
So, they are for me to use. However my dh did say when I started using cloth pads years ago that he initially thought that was just as strange and he did point out that cloth handkerchiefs are "acceptable" in todays society and they really are not much different from the Cloth Bathroom wipes. Immediately, he looked at the box of kleenex, and then looked at me and said "OH NO WAY!!"
I need to sew up a couple PUL bags. Did you all make your own bags...if so, did you put a zipper or drawstring in the top?
I think I have about 50-60 (I'd have to count) wipes made up. Since it is only me and will only be in the master bathroom.....and if I wash them once a week, do you think I have made enough or should I shoot for 100 of them?
That is what I get for opening a thread here, especially since I am trying to work on more areas of my life to reduce, reuse and recycle.
Actually, these wipes feel so soft. I have yet to use them...I want to get the PUL ordered and made up first. (I don't have any PUL on hand) But I imagine they will be wonderful and the hemmorohid comment did not fall on deaf ears here either and I hope for benefit in that "area". ;)

MICHELLE-YAY for you! They are so very soft. Will your girls use them just for pee? SO much nicer than paper!!! Dh still isn't a convert here, but I think he is coming round. He does not make fun of the rest of us using them, though. He thinks it is great:P Saves lots of money.
I think you are going to love them.
I have two types of bags-one with a zipper at the top, and one with elastic at the top. I think a drawstring or zipper would suit you. Make both kind and see what you end up liking.
I think you need more like a 100 for the week..especially people will start sneaking them and trying them eventually:P
I cut up old flannel pajamas of mine and am using them-which is so cool!
Have fun:)
Personally I have no problem washing them with towels or what ever. You can toss them in the washer by themselves for a simple cold rinse/prewash cycle then add whatever load of laundry you are going to add them to!(we stil have dipes here so that is what I wash them with)

Any ideas for doing these wet? Dd is really sensitive and gets a rash from a dry wipe. I tried using my wipes warmer and they got too hot. I also tried a periwash bottle stored in the wipes warmer with some wipes in there for insulation and still the water was too hot. Our bathroom sink doesn't get warm quick,so to wet it before hand isn't reasonable. Also I want to make it easy for dd who is going on her own and wiping herself. She is currently using regular baby wipes and throwing them in the trash. I am at a loss for more ideas! TIA :)

Thanks! I found a PUL bag around here that I'm using and then I'll sew up a couple more. I am re-using a empty cat litter bucket for my bucket and I put the PUL bag in it as a liner. Then we used permanent markers (we meaning my daughter and I) and decorated the bucket with things and also w/my sons name for these wipes. It actually looks cute! Then I "borrowed" a basket from my youngest ds's toy kitchen and am keeping the clean wipes in that. I only have this set up in the master bathroom for now. If anyone else shows interest in using these, I'll get it set up in the other bathroom too. If I have time, I'll take a pic of my set up and post it. *lol*
I'm going to sew up a bunch more today and use up all the flannel scraps I have that are too small to make anything else.
Edited to add: I will suggest my girls may want to try using them just for pee....that is a really good idea!!
Thanks again, It is funny how opening a thread out of curiosity can bring about a big change like this but it just made sense to me after I read all your responses.

Technically, I am not sure what PUL is exactly. But it is that fabric that is used in wet bags and on homemade all-in-one cloth diapers. (am I correct ladies?)
I'm pretty sure you can wash PUL on hot w/no problem....but someone else better correct me if I'm wrong.

PUL can be washed and dried on hot, I do it with our wetbag for ds's diapers. I had a mama here sew me a small PUL wetbag for Mama-cloth, I think I'll try my hand at making one for cloth wipes for me though. I don't have a serger so I go around the wipe (flannel/velour) 3X and it's slowww going. I have maybe 10 made so far! I won't be using them until we move into our new house (staying with family right now, I already do enough laundry as it is!), so I've got about 4 weeks to keep on sewing as many as I can!

We have a basket on the back of the toilet for clean ones and a small metal swing top garbage can next to that. We just use the girls old cloth wipes, so they have no standard size or fabric type.
We never end up with a wipe in the toilet, but sometimes, if we've run out of clean wipes, we do end up with toilet paper in the dirty wipe container. The girls forget that the paper goes in the toilet.
What else? Oh, I have two of the dirty wipe containers. When one gets full, I put it under the sink and put the empty one out. When both are full, I wash. If I had a larger size can, this wouldn't be necessary. We have no floor space in the bathroom, so I like one that can sit on the back of the toilet.
We keep TP also, dh and guests don't use the wipes.
My kids think it is normal to use cloth wipes since that is what was used on them when they were in dipes. They've just always used them.

I am really glad I did this. Thank you Juliebelle for starting this thread becuase it made a change in our home. :)
It really does not seem odd to be using the cloth wipes at all, to be honest. I do have a feeling our girls will try them if I have a smaller set up in the second bathroom where they usually go. Less floor space there so I may use Juliebelle's idea with the wet bag hanging from the toilet paper roll holder. But I'd like to find some kind of container but know I can't re-use another cat litter pail in that bathroom due to size. Maybe I'll take all my stuff into that bath and see if it would fit. I'd like to re-cycle those litter pails if possible and use them.
I did order some PUL. I needed it anyway to make nighttime underware for our older son who has special needs and still will wet at night.
I hope some others (who did not post) have enjoyed this thread also.

Well, I've used what my teenaged son calls "Tree Hugger TP" for a week now. I made enough that I did not have to wash them until this morning. (started using them 9 days ago, I think)
I honestly can't believe I did not do this a long time ago. It is soooooo simple. It is such a simple, inexpensive way to do something good for my health, budget , and environment.
I love it when I can make a little change (meaning one that I can afford to do) that I really feel makes a impact....no matter how small.
I am the only one in the family using these, however. But that is OK...maybe eventually someone, out of sure curiosity, around here will try one out sometime. If not, I'm happy that I made this change.
Thanks again for thsi thread,

Plus, those suckers go to the front of the laundry pile when I'm nearly out of clean ones!!! *lol*
I do encourage anyone considering this to give it a trial run. If you only make up a small amount and decide you hate it, you could use those wipes (folded) as a extra layer in your cloth mama pads.

I am just reading this thred for the first time and am realizing what a WONDERFUL idea it is, especially since we have a septic system. If we use them for "pee" only to start, DD and I will be the only ones to use them, but we're the only ones who use TP for "peeing" anyway (we're the only girls in the house ;) ), so even that'll help!
DH is going to think I have completely lost it, lol, but I'll run it by him just the same :)
I am worried about using them when I'm menstruating; they must need to be washed right away so they don't stain, right? What does everyone else do about that?
Also; I am a HUGE germophobe, so how would I wash them to make sure they are sanitized? What, besides detergent, would I put in with them to make sure the germs are killed? If we're only using them for "pee", this won't be an issue, but if we eventually use them for "poo" as well, I want to be sure there's no bacteria left behind. I know vinegar is a disinfectant, as well as bleach. What else works?
My only problem with trying FBW's is that I don't sew. I probably could if I tried, but I'd rather buy some pre-made FBW's if they're out there. Does anyone know where I can buy some, or would someone be willing to sew up a batch for us?

We use tp, but I have red velour menstrual wipes that I sewed up and the kids use cloth wipes. I have some Kushies wipes and I also have sewn some, including the menstrual wipes. I think the dimentions are 8" X 8"
ETA- I keep the clean wipes in a basket on the back of the toilet, with my pads. They are stacking plastic baskets. I keep the kids' wipes in a wipe box with water.

I like to use as few chemicals as possible (highly sensitive allergies here) but I feel my wipes come out really clean. I shared how I wash mine in that other thread here about washing cloth TP.
I use the same wipes for my period time. What I love is that I can wet down the cloth TP wipe and really get clean during that time of the month. I also put my used cloth pads right in the same bucket as the wipes (but I'm the only one who uses them here in our house) and I wash like I normally do for my cloth pads.

Well we don't care about staining around here. Stains don't mean that they aren't clean just that they have been used.
You can get FBW's at http://www.hiddenpearlcreations.com She calls them family shell wipes. Very soft & thick.

I never heard of this and the thought never even occurred to me, but I love it and I know DH is sure to really go for it. He's all for anything that saves a few dollars! I still have a bunch of our cloth wipes left over from when DD was in diapers. I always kept hers in a mixture that I made up in the wipes warmer with tea tree oil, calendula oil, and..... something. I'm wondering if that would be aggravating now? Or to grownups?
Also, if you cut up flannel pj's, does it unravel in the wash? I can't even sew on a button, so I don't have a clue.

That is what I do too.
As to the question about using old flannel, you'd have to finish the edges on a serger or regular sewing machine. Nearly all my wipes were made from scrap fabric, or old receiving blankets but I did finish the edges.

I found a wooden step-stool at Target that has a lid that lifts up on the top step. I keep my wipes in there, and I am also able to keep a smaller PUL bag for the dirty wipes in there too. I love it because it is so discreet, and it is easily reached from the toilet since our toilet is right next to the sink. I guess I'll have to come up with something new when my kids no longer need a stool to reach the sink, but for now I think it is fantastic.

How about baby wash clothes from the 2nd hand store? I use these to wipe baby's bum, and now I'm thinking mine as well LOL...
I'll need to purchase some more...

I pointed out this thread to DH (all 4 pages of it, LOL) and convinced him that we needed to do cloth TP, too! After all, if cloth dipes and wipes are good enough for the baby.... :D
I made up about 50-60 double sided flannel wipes, and I've been really happy with them. Already laundered the whole lot, just like we wash the cloth dipes, and it's working great.
I told my friend about the cloth TP thing, and she was interested in my wipes, so I'm going to make up a bunch for her, too. I'm so excited about this, it's so easy and now our house is pretty much paper-product free! :)

OMG, this is the best idea. In a house with 4 females you can only imagine how much TP we go through. Don't think dh will go for it but I know the girls and I will do it. Thanks for posting.
