I finally finished a tiny little square my oldest calls a polly pocket blanket. I was very pleased to figure out binding off in only a couple of tries.

Now, I have some Lion Brand Homespun and am trying to knit with it. I am not sure it was a good choice. I keep sticking the needles in the "middle" of the yarn. But, I love this yarn and have plans for this project. So, I am trying to stick it out. I hope I can post a pic of a finished project soon.

I think what you're describing is called "splitting" the yarn. I did that a lot too when I first started knitting. I was knitting really tight at first and that's why I couldn't get my needle in to the other to knit the stitch.

Just keep practicing....eventually your knitting will loosen up and you will stop splitting your yarn.

Sometimes it helps to get needles that have less pointy tips, but Homespun tends to split no matter what. Hang in there, you will find your rythm with this yarn pretty soon.

With each row, it does work better. Maybe that is why my first piece started small and expanded. :) My mom is just the opposite. Knitting stresses her so bad, that hers start big and end up tiny.

Now that I am getting it, I am loving it.

Oh that lion brand is hard to work with. I just did a scarf for my sister it took me 3 days, usually I can do one in about 2 hours but this stuff is so hard to work with. I just did a "doll" sized scarf with it and it was a little easier the second time around. I do find it is much easier to knit with it rather than crochet.

As I go along, I am enjoying it more and more. It is still frustrating at times but the end product is amazingly soft. It is on sale at AC Moore right now. When I go hunt some wood needles, I am going to check out the colors. The Fun Fur is also on sale and looks, well, fun. :)
