I am making a pair of knit drawstring pants from the book "Last Minute Knitted- Gifts". Awesome patterns. But anyway...

I did the 1st leg. And now I am at the end of the 2nd leg. Now I come to the part where I am to join the legs. These are the directions:

With 16" circular needle, knit across 23 sts of leg on the needles, cast on 5 stitches using the cable cast on method, transfer sts of the second leg from holder to 12in circular needle and knit 4 sts of second leg, cast on 5sts using the cable cast on method, knit remaining 22 sts of the first leg- 100 sts, all on 16" circular needle. Join for working in the rnd, and place marker to indicate new beginning of rnd at side of pants.


Does any of this make sense to you??? If so... and if you can see anything that needs to be explained better, can you please? I knit the 23 sts but thats as far as I get :( The rest is all so wierd. I don't get how to just cast on 5 more stitches after knitting 23.

I'm pretty sure if you're holding it all in front of you and doing it as you read it will work.

With 16" circular needle, knit across 23 sts of leg on the needles, cast on 5 stitches using the cable cast on method, transfer sts of the second leg from holder to 12in circular needle and knit 4 sts of second leg, cast on 5sts using the cable cast on method, knit remaining 22 sts of the first leg- 100 sts, all on 16" circular needle. So you have the 23 leg sts on the 16" needle. With the yarn cast on five sts right after the first 23. Now you have 28 sts.

Now you need to take this other leg, and get the sts off the holder onto some random 12" needle. I hope the mentioned that at least one other place for you, otherwise it's kinda mean.

So you have 28 leg sts from before, and the "other leg sts" on the holder which are now on the short circular needle and they want you to knit only four of them, then cast on five stitches like before. You have the first 28 + the four + five + the other leg stitches I'm assuming they want you to knit now.

Now the doubly tricky part to me is not knowing how many "other leg" stitches there are to work with, how many are there?

You're supposed to end up with a hundred total and I've made dh to the math in his head but we need to know more of the pattern rofl!

But don't be intimidated about casting on into your work, just do it and it'll work out I swear!

Thanks guys! I just came back to find this thread to reply that I am still lost as can be. I really shoudl take a pic off what MY cast on stitches looked like :P Kinda explains why I was stuck and couldn't go any further. I totally didn't see your post Becca and now I have a clue how to cast on properly at the end of a row LOL

actually I am still confused. I get how to regular cast on at the end of a row... but with cable cast on, I just get all confused. i don't get how to do it with my left needles. I'll take a pic of what I get. I don't know what to do with the stitches...

Here is a pic of my leg with the newly cast on stitches. Course they were cast on the left needle and now iI have no idea what to do with them. Prob didn't even do it right anyway!

You should have cast them on your right needle. Slip them off the left needle and redo them on the right one.

I must be stupid cause I just don't understand how. All the directions I see for cable cast on tell how to cast on by doing it with your left needle. I just don't get it. i feel like a dork.

Looks like the size Crystal is making has 45 sts on each leg.
So she should work 23 of the sts from the leg still on her needles, cast on 5, knit those 45 sts from the leg on the small circular, cast on 5 more and then knit remaining 22 sts of the first leg. Join for round and continue in stockinette.

Makes me want to make a pair after looking over the pattern again! :) We've checked this book out from library a few times already, probably should just go ahead and buy it! :)

sorry Jessica, I meant to answer yours!!!!! Well I *should* have 45 on each leg lol I don't, but that's ok. I don't even have any idea what happened. Actually it is prob what happenned when Chloe got a hold of my project and pulled my needles out. Dropped a couple stitches. Next pair will be nicer. If I can figure it out anyway lol Figures I can't figure out something as simple as casting on eh? Oh and I find the time charts SO inaccurate. I mean, I am not that fast of a knitter, but this has taken me FAR longer than 4-6hrs lol.

Oh and your explanation up there to Jessica, was so much more simpler I think.

I think I usually just cast on stitches like I do when starting out. :)

But here is an explaination for casting on during work. Down near bottom of page. You turn your work so the yarn is coming from your left needle....hope this helps!

ok so i suck. i had a really hard time when it got to knitting all 45 stitches of the one leg onto the circ with the 28 of the other... it was REAL tight. Well I am all around now, but why the heck do I have a HOLE in the crotch????

Sigh :(

A big hole or a hole where not all of the stitches were completely tight? Either way, it is an easy fix when you are weaving in the threads, just cinch it up, yk?

oh , no, its a big hole. like from an aerial view... you have the two leg circles side by side and a hole between them.


i really truely suck at this. but i think I knit around the rest of the stitches wrong. cause i did what karen said in her paragraph to jessica, but the book has it different. i'm a dork.

and even though all the stitches are on the circ... i still can't knit in the round. The needles won't bend enough to let me do this becuase of the inner parts the legs . i should take a pic again lol

Try to ignore the hole for now, you'lll close it when you finish.
Just do a few more rounds and things should look better.

What kind of needle are you using? Some of the cables are stiffer than others.

:( It's frogged. Hours and hours of work. All frogged. I just couldn't knit around it. I couldn't even bend the circs enough to knit the 1st stitch. It just wanted to stay in two parralel lines :( I am not good at just frogging a little as I end up droppig stitches and stuff... so I just frogged it :(

Bamboo. But it wasn't the cable, is the inner parts of the legs that wouldn't even really let me turn the circ. It really frustrated me :( I had to have really screwed something up.

So go borrow the book and make up a pair so I can see what yours looks like at that step :P lol

BTDT I'd easily have twice the number of soakers I do now if it weren't for the frogging!

Was this the first pants pattern you've tried?

The little pants are knit in Rowan Denim, and are really cute. I'd do the waistband differently though, I'd do ribbing and drawstring instead of the casing/elastic.
