It was a J.Crew sweater coat in navy blue cotton yarn. It was knit double stranded... and that is how I wound it. I figured it would be too much of a PITA to get it into single strands.

Here is the boatload of yarn I got. I might make me a sweater from knitty. I have never had so much of the same yarn before. This is going to be a cheap way to make stuff for myself!!! But how to do measure how much you have?

I also have a black one and a white one to take apart. This was some major work though. Mostly the winding it into skeins. Those are only single strands though :)

Thanks for looking! Need to post more here, keep forgetting about this forum!

I deconstructed my first this weekend as well--a ribbon yarn tank top. I have two BIG balls of variegated blue ribbon yarn now for a total cost of 1.98 :)

Very jealous. I tried on two sweaters so far, unsuccessfully.

Oh that stinks! What brand sweaters were they? Were they serged seams? My unravelling didn't go as easy as on the link I saw posted... but it wasn't too bad once I got going and found the part where it starts unravelling. I noticed Old Navy and Gap and J.Crew... they all have perfect seams.

I found winding the hardest... I unravelled it into piles, but my piles somehow managed to get tangled. Tangled yarn is a pita and I managed to cut and toss some. Got sick of screwing with it.

I wonder if it's easier to unravel sweaters with a ball winder...

Not sure what kind they were but they had "good seams". I'll try Gap sweaters next. Was trying for merino wool :-(

That is totally cool. Can you weigh your yarn to figure out how much you have?
