OK, I figured out the knitting :) But I've been trying to teach myself to crochet forever, I figured now's a good time to start again. My MIL gave my dd a 30 second "lesson" on Christmas and I watched. It was enough for me to chain & do a single crochet off the chain (I hope I'm saying that right).

But how do I go back down the row again? Do I flip the piece upside down? Go down the opposite side of the chain? I need a visual but that site w/ the videos requires real player and it screws up my computer everytime I try it.

I'm just trying to make a potholder or something small to get used to holding the yarn & hook, yk?

Please? :D

if you're working in single crochet...

when you get to the end of the row you work one chain stitch (I tell dd this chain stitch is the "ladder" you need to get the the next row) Then just flip your work over (just like in knitting) and go back across. You'll be hooking into the tops of the row you just finished.

If you're working in double crochet you need 2 chains (a 2 step ladder :) ) at the end of the row.

Goddess of Crafting!!! You are so awesome. (I'll have to remember the ladder thing)

Thank you! Makes perfect sense, the knitting reference made it click in my head :)

So, what do you do with a half double stitch?????? I learned 1 for single, 2 for hdc, 3 for dc, and 4 for tc:confused:

I do 2 for a hdc too.

I have seen 3 used for dc and 4 for treble in patterns but for me (and maybe I chain too loosely or something) if I use that many I can pick those stitches out from across the room when the item is finished because they poke out. Not such a big deal with some things but it makes me insane with a granny square.

I think the way you said it is probably the official way. I've been *unofficial* for so long I forgot. :)
