I can't get the hang of crochet. I know the straight stitches, but things never turn out the way I want them, other than dish clothes, LOL. I tried working in the round more times than I can count, and the stitches always get tighter and tighter till I can't even fit the needle in, LOL.

I :heart: all the beautiful knitting needles, I :heart: looking at all the yarns, and I really want to learn, but I am very afraid, LOL.

Any advice on either one, or should I just give up, LOL.

I started off with crochet. I've been a "hooker" for about 13 years. When I picked up the knitting needles about 7 or 8 months ago, I couldn't get it figured out. It baffled me that the needle w/o a hook could actually manage to get the yarn to go anywhere. I used the book Stitch and ***** and also there's a site online that has videos you can watch. For me, the easiest method was the continental. It was faster and I already had good control of my tension, thanks to crocheting.

I hate crocheting. My mom tried to teach me and it was torture for both of us.

I think knitting is way easier!

I find crochet is much easier, I taught myself and picked it up very quickly. Knitting took me a year, lol, I learned last year, took a knitting class, felt very frustrated, but then I had ds in january and put it up for awhile, then got it back out a couple months ago and I don't know what happened, but knitting is fairly easy now. I'm pretty fast at the knit stitch, it's the purl that is still a little awkward, but getting so much easier.

However, I can still crochet much faster. Right now I'm crocheting ds a pair of wool longies, hoping to be done by Xmas and I'm working really fast, if I attempted to knit them, it'd take me a month, lol.

I know they say crochet is easier but I couldn't teach myself how to do it like I could w/knitting.

I got a basic knitting book from walmart in my lap and used the videos on this (http://www.fiberartshop.com/) website.

Don't give up!

I just bought a "teach yourself to knit" kit from Michael's for $8.88. It included a book w/ projects, two sets of needles, and other "stuff" that still looks mysterious to me. I now know how to cast on in two different ways, and am learning the knit stitch. I'd say if I can learn, anyone can...LOL

I have books for both. Really didn't enjoy crochet, couldn't learn to knit on my own either. Then I took a class at my LYS. I am on my way with knitting now. Probably wont pick up a crochet hook again. I enjoy this!

for me, crocheting and knitting are completely different animals. the only thing they have in common is that they both use yarn, lol. i learned both so long ago (as a very young child) that i don't really remember one being easier than the other.

the characteristics of each are so different that i prefer them for different things. i much prefer knitting for garments of any kind, but crocheting definitely has it's own place in my life.

I have been crocheting for so long I simply don't have the patience for knitting, but I know many dedicated knitters who simply cannot wrap their hands around crochet. It seems so many people take to one or the other like a duck to water, and not always the one that's "supposed" to be easier!

but then that is what I learned first...

a friend taught me to cast on and to knit even purl and cast off but I can't for the life of me remember purl or cast off so nothing ever gets accomplished.

It is true for knitters, if they have been at it for any length of time to not get crochet because their whole way of thinking and holding the needle and working up patterns is different and when doing crochet it gets all mixed up and frustration sets in etc...

Some are able to do both, I enjoy crochet, easy, fun, and fast,

Although I love what can be done with knitting, I love the garments and the fact that with knitting you use 3x's less yarn than with crochet!!! would save me lots of $$ to switch.
