I'm infamous for taking too many pictures to illustrate what I'm trying to explain, so bear with me. :D
How to bind a quilt with mitred corners
Step One:
Decide that none of the bias tape that's floating around your sewing room is the right color. Make your own. (No, it's not on the bias. Doesn't need to be since we're doing mitred corners instead of curves.)

Step Two:
Stitch right side of tape to quilt top.

Step Three:
When you come to the edge, stop about 1/4" - 1/2" (depending on how wide your tape is).

If you go too far, you can unpick a little.
Step Four:
Rotate the quilt and flip up the tape.

Step Five:
Fold down

Step Six:
Stitch down and continue to the next corner.

Repeat. :D

Once you've machine sewn the binding to the quilt top you can then proceed to hand stitch it onto the back...
Step Seven:
Get a nice new sharp needle, thread it & put a knot at the end.

Step Eight:
Secure to the edge.

Step Nine:
Stitch.

Step Ten:
Stitch more.

Step Eleven:
The mitred corner.

Step Twelve:
The rest of the way around the mitred corner

Repeat.

I swear I'm mentally deficient when I look at these sew-a-longs.
When you put the binding on the quilt, right sides together and machine sewed it all up, should I have raw edges even or should the quilt stick out past the binding?

I am struggling with binding on heart shaped pot holders. It's my biggest sewing challenge ever. Thank you for the tips, I am inspired to try again!

Very nice! Thanks Barb!!!
I don't have one of those bias tape maker things, I think I need one. What size do you recommend?

Mine takes a 2" wide strip of fabric. The package is long gone now so I don't know what size that would translate to when buying a new one.

Make sure that you cut your strips actually on bias if you are binding something with curves like your heart shaped pot holders- it will make the whole process easier and lay nicer. Bias cutting is not neccessary if you are binding something it straight edges

I've always done my quilts the easy way, not the correct way. But you have inspired me to try it. Not with the fall quilt cause I want to get that done fast for my dd for Christmas, but with the yuletide quilt (when the squares get here) that is for me so I can take my time with it.
Oh, and your nails are beautiful! I'm never able to keep mine looking nice, since I have to be washing my hands so much at work.

Thank you Barb! I already did the binding on my quilt because I was stressing over not getting it done for the holidays...wish now I would have waited because I completely misunderstood the instructions I read online and it shows....the binding looks pretty crappy:( But I am doing a second quilt for my nephew in January and I will DEFINITELY use your instructions!!
Oh and for the record I did believe that YOU hand-sewed the back of your quilts...I just didn't believe that ALLISON hand-sewed the back of a quilt (ducks)
