Nick is 15 months and still nurses often during the day. The last few days, he has gone back and forth between nursing fine and refusing to nurse, saying "owwwwwww" and holds his tongue after he attempts a latch, and cries to get down. I can't see anything wrong in his mouth, no red spots, no thrush (we have never had it). He is eating table food fine without complaining, so I really don't think it's anything physically hurting his mouth. Any ideas???

Could he have fluid in his ears. My dd got this no infection just some fluid and made it uncomfortable to nurse.

Exactly. My little man is 14 m/o and is doing the same thing. I suspected there was something going on in his mouth. Sure enough, I looked yesterday and there was a molar trying to break the skin. The poor guy wanted to nurse so badly but it hurt him to latch on.

I hope that whatever little Nick has going on gets resolved soon so you both can resume nursing happily.:heart:

Teeth makes sense to me. The suction from nursing would pull on tender gums, whereas when he's eating table food, he can avoid chewing with that area.

I second the teething. When Jasmine was 12 month old she was teething like grazy (8 teeth in 2 weeks) and during that time she would only nurse if I rubbed her gums with some Orajel teething gel first.
Recently she dd get her last teeth in (before th 2 year molars) and she kept pointing to the tooth whenever she was nursing. I took it as a sign it did hurt her so I asked her if it was an ouwie there and she nodded yes.

Thank you mamas! I will be expecting to see some molars popping then! This is the longest that I have nursed (even though I have breastfed all six) so this is new to me!

what about a cold sore? DD was prone to them.

My daughter had a hard time nursing one time when she'd hit her chin on something and unknown to me had bit the underside of her tonuge.
