This might not work for your family, but we skipped training pants altogether for both of mine. DD had 6 pairs of panties when she switched fom diapers at 20 months, and DS had a pile of hand me downs (read way too many) when he switched to undies at 27 months. Just an idea. It worked for us because we have hardwoods, so the mess was easy to handle. Also, we only had messes about 2 days with DS, and about a week with DD.

what about bedtime? did you stick with the undies then too? or do dipes?

This part always makes me a little uncomfortable, because my kids seemed to do this part very differently from what anecdotal evidence suggests is "normal". I swear I am telling the truth.

Each of them, about a week after really seeming to understand the whole potty thing began waking at night. Each was still in a diaper at night at this point. Anyway, I am totally a non thinking person in the middle of the night, and I was baffled by this behavior. Both times, DH had to point out that they might need to potty. Anyway, after at most four nights of waking and going potty, they began sleeping through the night and waking dry. We switched to undies at this time, because it was so difficult to get a diaper off and back on in the mostly dark bathroom, it seemed worth the risk. Neither has EVER wet the bed (knocking hard on wood). That's my story and I am sticking to it...

We just used side snapping diapers that were easy to pull up and down (maybe leave them a snap loose on the waist) and no covers. We continued to use our same nighttime routine.

Maybe it would be possible to make a modified pair of underware so that it has a "pad " in it like a fabric mama's pad, but sown in maybe it would soak in more then just undies??
