There are lots of opinions on this, especially when it comes to build up & staining.
I use Burt's Bees with no problems. However, if you want something that won't leave a mark on your diapers, Christina at Natural Newborn has a spray that is fabulous!

We like angel baby bottom balm. Its all natural, safe for cd's and can be used as a first aid cream as well.
You just have to be careful of things that act as a substantial barrier, for example, anything with zinc oxide in it. We used Earth Friendly Baby diaper cream and Burt's Bees Skin creme mostly, but I did occassionally use the Burt's Bees that has zinc oxide in it. The point is to be judicious in how much the diapers are exposed to it, because it WILL build up, and it is hard to get out.

You could always use a liner anytime that you are using diaper cream, too.
I make liners out of sherpa and flannel and they work great. I don't like to have fleece next to DS's skin, but if you don't mind, you can buy a yard and cut it into pieces. It doesn't need serged or anything- it won't fray.
That way you can use any cream that you want!
If you don't want to go the liner route, some other "diaper safe" diaper creams that I know of....

I also have heard that the Weleda Calendula cream won't leave any buildup. Ours is currently MIA- my toddler got his hands on it. ;)

We've been using coconut oil with great success. Not exactly a typical diaper creme, but it works really well!
