Last year, my son made rolled beeswax candles as gifts for the family. I'd like him to be able to give out gifts again this year (he was SO proud), but it would be nice to do something different. Anyone have any ideas of crafts that a 5 year old can do mostly on his own, that are gift-worthy?

This year my 5 year old will be making checkbook covers. I purchased some clear plastic checkbook covers and will have her color a paper insert cut to the right size to slide into the cover and voila! A checkbook cover that the grands will love.
I've also had her water color small "materpieces" that we then attatched to those business card sized magnets and then stuck laminate to the top of the masterpiece. They made cute gifts that the grandparents loved.

My 3 year old is making (with assistance because she's little) melt and pour goat's milk soap... we melt it in the microwave, she stirs it, we add color/fragrance/additives such as chamommile.. she stirs it, I help her dump it into the mold and she helps me push it out when it's set :)
