So I brought my cat to the vet on the 3rd for an abcess between his eye and ear. They gave me meds and told me warm compresses to let it leak. SO thats pretty much healed but tonight... *sigh* I go to pick him up and i feel this wet on my hand and look and its this little off white thing. So I wipe it off with a Kleenex and wash my hands and then something tells me to look at his bum. Well sure enough, there's a worm coming out. it's all wiggly and stuff and disgusting. So now, AGAIN, I have to take him to the vet. I have no money to take him. This cat is costing me ALOT of money. I love him to death and will do anything to keep him healthy but it's one thing after another. I'm not complaining really but just wondering where the heck these things came from. He doesn't have fleas. He's an outside cat but the last 2 weeks he's been inside all the time. Now that it's been cold, he's been inside alot. Do the worming meds at the store really work? About how much is the testing of his stool sample and the worming meds the vet would give does it cost? He is 14 yrs old. Is he really prone to stuff since he's pretty old? I feel bad for him. The mean worms are probably eating all the good food he eats. I feed him Science Diet senior, recommended by his vet. I gave him his meds, Amoxicil, in with canned cat food twice a day cuz he will not let me give him pills without getting my arms clawed off. It is hard to keep him confined cuz he will claw away at my bathroom door. I don't want him near my puppy cuz I don't want him getting worms either. Can the puppy get worms from him if he sneaks in the room and snags some cat food from the bowl? These worms are moving. It was moving out of his bum and even when I had it on the tissue. it is pointy at the end just like tapeworms. A while back one of my turtles had tapeworms but my cat doesn't come in any kind of contact with the turtles or any of their stuff. This is so disappointing cuz I wonder if his belly hurts. I feel so bad for him.
I'm sorry for rambling but this is my baby. I've had him since he was just a babe. :wah:
Any help is appreciated. He's never had worms before. Only thing he's ever had wrong was these abcesses.

kim ~ are you established @ your vet as a customer?

if i call our vet & tell them i need worming pills - they sell them for $10 each..i think.

no appt. no office visit, etc.. worth a call to check.

goodluck.

Hi,
Well I've been there so many time for his abcesses that they know him by name when i walk in the office and they know my puppy cuz they all love him. I'm gonna call in a few minutes to see what they say about the worms and hopefully they can just give me pills for him. Thank you for your reply. :)

Yup, call and get a broad spectrum wormer. The over the counter worming meds for tapeworms do NOT work. And it sounds like it could be tapeworms or roundworms. I'd ask them for an rx of Drontal...a broad spectrum wormer. Even if they do a fecal test, worm eggs do not shed all of the time, so we can see a neg. fecal test 50% of the time, and yet the pet does have worms. If you see the worms, it's enough to get a wormer. And since he's been seen recently, they should give you one without seeing him.

Hi,
Thanks for the replies. I called the vet and they said to just bring him in so they can weigh him so they know his weigh range. They said it's 1 pill I give him 1/2 hr after he eats. I have to go pick them up. Thanks for all your help! :)
