How does it work? Do you just do activities together once in a while or do you take turns teaching certain subjects. I heard a speaker at the homeschool conference talk about co-oping, and would love to learn more.

Yes, I am. We started over a year ago. It has changed over time, especially since we keep shrinking as people drop out to go to school. Right now there are just three families, each with 2 kids, although another friend is joining, she has 1. This year, we each "teach" based on where our strengths are. One mom is a chef, she teaches cooking and baking. I teach handwork and sewing. Another mom owns an organic farm, so she teaches farming. We rotate whose house the kids go to each week. We also do field trips together, meet at the park, take a spanish and gym class together. We also trade child care for date nights.

I would say we are more a community than a coop.

We did a couple of years ago.
My children loved it!

I am not sure the exact number of kids, I am thinking it was a little under 100.
Ages prek-high school.

We only met once a month for half a day.
The preK children went into one class and played, had activities, snack, etc

The older children were divided into 3 age groups.
Their day was split into 3 sessions.

Parents volunteered to teach a class, at least one a year.
I remember some of the classes were:
PE, English (Taught by parents that had been school teachers), Different Countries, Health

These ideas sound like fun! I think maybe I will approach my homeschooling buddies and see if they would be interested in forming an organized thing. We all chat about homeschooling, but never really get together during the week to do things.

We do have an homeschooling "School" in town, that you can take a single class at. We did that once, may look into it again in the future. The only problem with this program is that it has grown so big, that it is very impersonal. No one talks to each other and going there, for me, was very lonesome.

Our HS group has one. There are 4 classes offered but the kids only take 3. For example, this semester the kids chose between Zoology or Geography. Then everyone took PE and Money Skills. We meet every two weeks on Monday from 1-4pm.

They are divided up by age groups: K-2nd, 3rd-6th, 7th+. Then they rotate to the different classes. My girls' schedule (K-2nd) is: Zoology, PE, Money Skills. I *think* the 3-6th go to PE first.

If you have a child involved in CoOp, you are expected to be a teacher, assist a teacher or help in the nursery/preschool room.

Next semester the classes will be:
Drama (3+ is doing a Greek Play, K-2 is doing an easier play)
Sign Language
Latin or Spanish
?? (can't remember the other one..LOL)

My kids attend a hs enrichment school. I'll post more if you'd like, although I wouldn't call it a "co-op" because we don't trade.

I don't know if you would call what we have a co-op, but our HS group has Discovery Day every Wednesday at a local park. We bring crafts, sensory stuff for the kids to explore, etc. We also have an exploration day on Thursdays where we typically visit a natural area without a play structure and let the kids explore. Last week we were at a regional park for about 6.5 hours! Yesterday we took advantage of the negative tide and went tidepooling most of the day. Lots of fun and the kids enjoy both the days with some activities provided and the ones where they explore on their own.
