What kind of felt do you use? 100% wool, a mix, what? Any good places to buy it on line, that don't charge an arm and a leg? Links please.

I use the wool blend at Joann's. Depending on the bolt, its either 65-70% rayon and the rest wool. it comes in so many colors, is easily accesable to me and I can use my coupon if I need a lot.

Danielle also mentioned once that she felt that they were pretty equal to 100% wool felt in behaivior. But I will let her elaborate on that ;)

I use the wool/rayon blend from Joann's usually too. A soak in hot water (the colors will bleed) with some agitation (or even a run through the washer) will make it more dense...it's almost impossible to distinguish it from 100% wool felt after it's been processed like this.

The way I see it, wool blend felt is a drastic improvement from acrylic craft felt. 100% wool felt is only slightly better than the blend...but it's way more expensive. And wool blend felt that has been given the hot water treatment is just about identical to 100% wool felt.

I have had 100% wool felt that looked and felt very similar to wool blend but for some reason it was really hard to get a needle through (and I use really fine needles).

I have to say I don't agree that it is "just like" 100% wool felt!!!
of course its just my humble opinion.
But then again, I use the thicker, 100% wool felt-
the wool rayon felt is quite similar to the thin sheets of all wool.
I'd be happy to send you a sample of thick wool felt, its so great for making puppets and nature table dolls

Trisha, I agree with you...it's not "just like" wool felt *unless* it's been fulled/felted in hot water (and still, that's nothing more than my opinion lol). Then it gets much thicker/denser and is really close, imo...not exactly the same...but really close.

The wool blend felt is thinner than the 100% wool. But frugality gets the better of me (perhaps I just haven't found a good source of 100% wool). I've paid close to $5 for a 9"x12" square of 100% wool. I can get a 36"x36" piece of wool blend for less, on sale. I do lose a few inches after the hot water treatment but it's still so much more for less. I guess I've just always been disappointed with the 100% wool felt I've bought because I expected it to be drastically better to justify the huge difference in price. I DO think it's better...it just wasn't better enough, for me, to be worth the difference in price.
