Adam loves to play with Play Doh... and I planned on getting him a set with tools for the holidays. BUT... since we will be GFCF by then, I want it to be GFCF.

Can I buy some somewhere? I would rather buy at this point than make - just have too much on my sewing/craft plate right now. What about Crayola's Model Magic?

I really want to do this... but I know I am going to need some help for the areas that are not so apparent. Who would have ever thought that Play Doh could effect something that is basically a food allergy (it is, right?).

Here's a thread with a link to www.discountschoolsupply.com. They have a big tub of I think 6 different colors of playdough. It's several pounds worth, for $18. It lasts well, does get a bit dry esp. if not put right back in the bags. But it's definitely worth trying, we like it pretty well here.

Here's an idea taken from Michelle/mpeel to use clay. We bought some recently and started using this. I really like it, as does William. It's harder work than playdough though, which can be good for developing hand and finger strength. Try hiding a marble inside it for kiddos to dig out:

You can buy Marblex gray self-drying clay at Michael's, Walmart (sometimes) or Hobby Lobby. 5 lbs is about 6 bucks. My girls never had playdoh. We use this. It is great too because you can get it really wet or use it drier. My girls LOVE to sculpt. I sculpt too. I guess that is why I started with this instead of "kid" stuff.

Finally, I want to suggest that a lot of the Play Doh brand playsets are a lot of fun, just donate the dough itself to a friend, substitute with your own. We are particularly loving this set right now:

I also like the Playdoh scissors, I make a long strip of dough and have William cut it into short strips. It's easier than paper and a lot of fun. You can be cutting up french fries, pieces of cheese for pizza, baby snakes...whatever imagination suggests.

Also Model Magic is GFCF. They suggested it when Jake started school. :)

So far the playdough I made has lasted from August till now in the fridge. It's used pretty frequently at school. We have some for home but he hardly uses it here.

Can you reuse it over and over if you keep it in package? It would be neat to make dried creations, but it would also be nice to reuse like regular playdough. Hmm, might have to go get some now. Thanks for the tip Lauren.

Yes, they reuse it at his school, just put it back in the bag and seal tightly.

I saw a cute multi pack of Model Magic tonight at TRU for $9.99, it had I think 8 colors. Tiny packs though of each color. But we would reuse it over and over, so maybe it's not that bad. I like that it's very light and airy feeling, not heavy and hard like regular playdough. I think it would be easier for William to work with as he has some fine motor delay.
