Oren picked this dvd out of the $5.50 bin at Wal Mart. It is cute and the boys really like it but Oren keeps asking me why the Mom is at the hospital. Is there any background on this movie?

Also Oren checked out Spirited Away from the library and we both really like it.

Can someone that also has kids that like these movies recommend a couple more?

Thanks!

I love Kiki's Delivery Service and Castle in the Sky. Princess Mononoke is good too.

This website will help:

http://www.totoro.org/

The mother had tuberculosis.

Other kid movies by Miyazaki are Castle in the Sky and Kiki's Delivery Service. Castle in the Sky has gun fire in it, so Hadyn hasn't watched it. My dh and I have and we liked it. You might want to preview it for your ds. Kiki's Delivery Service is very sweet and lots of fun.

Thank you for the website. I am not sure he will understand tuberculosis but hopefully if I say that he won't want a big explanation. lol!

I will check into the other ones. I'm not sure if our library will have them or not.
Thanks guys!

Marcey may make me eat my words (I told her I don't care for anemie style annimation) but we watched Kiki's Delivery service on the Disney Channel a couple weekends ago and I loved it (I managed to get over my asthetic objections)! The kids really liked it to. lol

I'm thinking I need to check out Spirited away.:p

Spirited Away was really good. Oren loved it. It scared Iven in parts though. :(

I checked the library and they had all the movies that you guys said. I reserved a copy of all of them so I just have to wait for them to be transferred up here now.

My oldest loves Princess Mononoke (10yo), but I'd agree with Marcey that it may not be appropriate without viewing first. We couldn't figure out Spirited Away for the life of us. We also have Castle in the Sky. But I would say that Kiki is probably the favoritist ( is that word, probably not ) around here and more friendly for different age groups.

Has anyone else notice the brothel theme that seems to run through some of these movies

I'm not an anime fan but we love Spirited Away.

Shalon, if you see another Totoro at walmart can you get it for me? I'd be happy to pay for it and shipping if you can.

I probably won't go until Saturday but will be happy to look. The movies there usually don't go very fast since they are a pain to look through. Oren and Iven love looking through them.

Have you ever watched the really *good* stuff? You might be surprised.

no I haven't, but the style of the art I've seen annoys me. I don't like the stylised expressions, the eyes etc . I like Spirited Away because of the story and plot, not because of the style. Oh and the voice actor they used for Sen annoyed me too because it was like she was whiny shouting the whole time.

i didn't like Kiki's but the kids liked it. They haven't seen Totoro yet...

Lydia loves anime. We've got Spirited Away, but I'd love some more recommendations. :) (Keep in mind that she also loves Pirates of the Carribean, Beetlejuice, & Spiderman.)

another vote for Kiki's Delivery Service....My kids love Spirited Away...but I agree with the whole yelling/talking thing. I always yell around the house a line Sen says to the pigs who are her parents "Mommy! Daddy! I love you! I will save you!"....my kids crack up when I do that.

You know, it's hard for me to make recommendations for kids. Hadyn has seen about 5 movies total, in her whole life and only 2 of them were Japanese: Kiki and Totoro. I can make some adult suggestions, but it's hard for me to make them for kids.

For adults (you can preview them to see if they are ok for kids):

The Vision of Escaflowne - the series, not the movie - this is one of my most favs! I've only seen it subtitled

Neon Genesis Evengelion - violent and serious, but very good. No kids.

Tenchi Muyo - kids could watch it. It has some sexual humor in it, but it will go over most of their heads. It's a lot of fun

Ranma 1/2- Very fun, slap stick like humor and sexual humor. The sexual humor would mostly go over the kid's heads. Hadyn loves the Manga for this series

Inu Yasha - great series. It spans many years/seasons. Some violence with sword fighing and blood

Cowboy BeeBop - Dark, violent, guns, but one of the best series out there. Adults only Great music.

FLCL - bizarre, hurts your mind kind of anime. Not for the weak of mind. LOL

Ghost in the Shell - movie. Adults only, violence

Akira - movie - I have heard many times that this is very good, but exceptionally violent with lots of blood. I'll pass, thanks.

Rurouni Kenshin - series - sword fighting, but quite good

Anime News Network has a great set of lists for rating anime:

Amine Top 10 Lists (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/ratings-anime.php)

Does that help?

~M

Ed to add: Dh and I have read the mangas for Love Hina and Marmalade Boy. Both were enjoyable and have heard they did an animated series for both. But, we haven't seen them yet. They do get our thumbs up for the manga.

Yes, it does, thank you! According to the SDCL online catalog, my library has Kiki in right now. Lucky for me it's story day for preschoolers and we're going anyway. :)

I'll see if they have any of those others......
