My son's birthday is coming up, and in his class, when it's your birthday, you bring a treat for the rest of the class. Then they all celebrate and sing Happy Birthday and share out the treats.

Everybody seems to bring cupcakes. I have no desire to bring in a tray full of store-bought, super sweet icing cupcakes. You should see the kids when they come out of class on birthdays, lol. They al have icing on their noses, and they are running around like monkeys. :) I don't mind bringing in something cake-y, to make it feel like a special treat, but I'd like it to be at least relatively healthy. All the treats that we make at home and that my son enjoys are too whole-grainy and not sweet enough for the kids in his class. Is there a compromise? I'd love some recipes or ideas.

Edited to add his school is nut-free.

are you allowed to bring in home made stuff? At both of my childrens schools they can only be packaged store bought treats,,,how gross is that?

I like to make mini-muffins for the kids. Our preschool is kosher so I can't but when we have outside parties that's what I make.

I have always made homemade snacks for my kids preschools.

Some things I have done:

Pretzel rods half dipped in chocolate (could use carob too)
Cereal Bars
Trail Mix in little baggies (no nuts)
Muffins

Once in a pinch, I picked up Fig Newmans.

There are lots of low and no sugar cake recipies that can be used to make cupcakes. I find most of mine on http://www.recipesource.com

Instead of doing full blown frosting you could do something like put a platic spider ring on the top of each or sprinkle them with powdered sugar. Still sugar but mush less than that horrible white frosting stuff.

but I baked them in ice cream cones (cake cones, with the flat bottom) and iced them with hommade icing (yeah, lots of sugar there, but no dye) to make them "special".

Just a dab of icing on top makes them look like "ice cream".

Went over like gangbusters and at least the muffins were whole grain and the icing was handmade from whole food.

My ds went to a Montessori school last year and candy and sugary snacks were not allowed. When it was his birthday I brought a fruit tray (that's all that way allowed). The kids loved it though.
