I mean, can you believe in Jesus and believe in his teachings and not consider yourself a Christian?
In YOUR opinion....LOL

wow! now THAT is a can of worms! i believe in most of jesus' teachings and am not a christian.

there are a few things that he taught that i don't agree with but they aren't really major issues.

Yes....I mean, a lot of people believe Jesus was a great man/teacher/whatever....they aren't necessarily Christian. I mean, Satan himself believes in God/Jesus and he is by no means a Christian, LOL! Christians go beyond believing in Jesus...we submit, worship, and rely upon Jesus....

Jennifer, that was almost exactly what I was going to post. Yes, many "believe" in Jesus, but they do not follow him/his teachings. There is a big difference.

if i can speak for jenny here...i think she means more like being a believer of the teachings...not just believing he existed...

historically speaking, there is not much of an argument that he lived.

but i think what jenny is saying is can you respect and possibly even follow some of the teachings without being christian. i would say very definitely yes.

and i guess i should stop my ramblings or else my post may get deleted ;o).

I would say yes, just as you can follow some of the teachings of many other wise spirtual men like Ghandi and Martin Luther King.

Sure you can. Even the Demons believe that HE is the son of GOD, and obviously they aren't going to heaven! lol!

(I will look up the passage, but I am referring to HIM allowing them to go into the pigs, because they begged HIM to do that instead of casting them out of the body HIMSELF... for those who know what I am talking about... for those who don't ...youprobably think I am crazy now! lol!)

Yup--believing is one thing, but being Christian is to be a lover of, servant of, and gracious recipient of Jesus Christ and His sacrifice.

yes, I believe christianity is a religion, and includes or is a part of "churchianity".
I call Him Yahushua, not jesus.
I am no loner a "chrisitian" and no longer attend church.
but we read the Scriptures, learn from them, and teach our children His principles. We try to be obediant to His word.

hmm... well, if you believe in ALL his teachings then you ARE a christian, LOL. Labels aside, because i know that Christians get bad press, i consider myslef a follower of Jesus Christ, not lutheran, catholic, etc. that is it. If you DO believe in all of Jesus' teachings, you believe that Jesus is the way to God. the idea is that we are lacking the ability to get to God ourselves.. no matter how hard we try, we lack the ability to be what God wants us to be. Just try following the letter and the spirit of the 10 commandments for 1!!! day, i can't that is for sure. Jesus said that he is the way to God. the only way. if you believe that and choose to give yourself to Jesus it doesnt matter what you call yourself, it then just becomes semantics.

Okay, to throw in a monkey wrench...LOL...What if you believe in what Jesus taught, but not in the resurrection, the virgin birth, that he was the son of God - or at least no more so than any child?

Well, these are good things to believe in.. essential to any Christian.. i think you probably already know that Christians belive that it is through faith in Jesus that we are saved eternally.. but i'm not going to lecture you :-)) i'm glad you are thinking about the issue. i would just say LISTEN. Maybe i'm weird or something, (well i guess you could say that is a given, LOL) but i have always known right away whenit was God talking to me. I hope you find what you are looking for :-)

Oh, I'm not necessarily speaking personally...LOL...I'm just being hypothetical...Thanks though!
I just want to get some good discussion going.

I'm pretty firm in my own convictions, but I don't go into them much because I'm the moderator and think it's better that I preserve an air of neutrality.
I am a Quaker, but, that really doesn't tell you anything...LOL

okay...i believe in a lot of things jesus taught, most in fact. however, i do ~~~not~~~ believe he was the son of g-d anymore than my dh is, nor any less...

i see him as a good man who did some great things...and miracles? i believe he did some magic...turning water to wine to save the party...sounds like magic to me...

i do not believe that the bible (esp what christians call the new testament) is the word of g-d...i believe it is a combination of works written during an era of political unrest...

my opinion of paul...let's just say jew's jew would NOT be an accurate description...no matter what he says. there are right wing rifle-toting-living-in-the-hills-protecting-our-white-race brethren who claim to be VERY american...i see a lot of similarities...

jenny, i cannot believe i am getting sucked into this thread...i KNOW betterhttp://www.amitymama.com/images/icons/wink.gif!

so, these are just my opinions, how i see it from my little corner of the world painted by my experiences, yada, yada...
