I am wondering if I am not meeting the needs of my oldest who will turn 9 in January. We have a few games, a lot of blocks, some legos, books, wooden trains - and that's about it. No t.v. or videos - they do have a few computer 'games'.
What does your son like to play with?
Oh, and he has a microscope which he loves to use (I'm always catching him scrape algae from the fish tank!).

legos, legos, legos.
Actually he's 13 now, but he has thousands and thousands of them, and builds really intricate buildings and cars and stuff with them still!!

My 9 yr old son likes things like Pokemon cards, books, 3-D puzzles, model cars and airplanes, remote control airplanes, Rubik's cubes, telescopes, crossword puzzles, legos, nerf toys, and our basketball/hoop.

My inlaws gave him a remote control car a few years ago. He rarely plays with it. As much as he says he likes it, it just doesn't get used. Personally, this doesn't surprise me because there is nothing left for him to 'do' with the car: it drives itself.
Like I said, we don't do any t.v. - so there is no pokeman or yugioh (did I spell that right?) anything...
Model cars: might be a worthy thought...

YuGiOh! He eats, sleeps and breathes YuGiOh! It annoys the carp outta me, but it's really cool to listen to him dueling a friend...he has to add and subtract, figure out which cards combine with others to beat his opponent, so he's learning math while doing something he LOVES.
He also likes video games (he has an N64 and a Gameboy Advance), legos, reading (chapter books like Magic Treehouse and also magazines like Highlights and Kids Discover).
He likes to collect coins too. :)

Sports of all sorts.
Football, soccer, baseball, basketball, whatever...both organized and in the backyard.
Swingset.
Reading.
Building blocks.
Wooden train set.
Sports cards.
Drawing.
Some x-box (again, only sports games)
He is not allowed to watch Yugioh or Pokemon, or I am sure he would have more interests.

Maybe getting him a 'journal' to put stories in would not be a bad idea... hmmmm
He'd love to climb trees, but there is not much selection where we live (in Chicago).
