Jennbenr/Jenn posted on 8/1/04 (http://www.amitymama.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=183984) that she had just recieved an email about this link from SewNews for Bowled Over By Linda Johansen (http://www.sewnews.com/resources/library/hol04bowl/) Another how to link. This one is for circular bowls.

HINTS/OTHER:

lisak asked on 6/26/04 (http://www.amitymama.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=175579) if
I need to know if the cording aroung the outside edge is necessary.
Shari/Shari, Blueberry-Farm/Suzanne, and Scarlet/Bethan all agree that it is not necessary.

For those thinking of making these make sure you have a brand new spool of thread. I ran out of thread literally 1.5 inches from being finished.

The first thread that mentions "fabric bowl" that was still "active" when I did this search was from Lydiasmomma/Renee on 4/21/04 wanting to know if anyone was interested in them for the summer swap.

--------------------

Now for my "things I learned" notes on the bowls I did today/night.

1) Timtex is not an iron on product. Thank you Scarlet for clarifing that. I truely thought that it ironed on one side and to get the other side to stick you needed WonderUnder/HeatNBond/FusibleWeb. Alas, I'm glad that was clarified before I started dreaming about Timtex vs what I had on hand.

2) WalMart has some pretty hearty interfacing, again TY Scarlet for the heads up. The *real* sturdy stuff is 4.44 p/y @ 23" wide. I only used that on the final bowl. Prior to that I used the 1.44 p/y stuff that I was thinking was pretty good. The difference between the 2, imho, is the difference between Art and a take out fish and chips tray. The paper take out tray/1.44p/y stuff does the job but is not substantial. The Art / 4.44 p/y stuff looks "wow" in comparison to the other according to dh. So in conclusion I'd say there is a time and place for each type. Do you want to make fabric bowls for a little girl to play with or a small child to hold little trinkets in? I'd go for the 1.44 p/y Do you want to WOW your IL's or as a gift for friend or teacher or other adult? I'd go for the big bucks.

PLEASE NOTE: I have not had the opportunity to try Timtex yet. I do plan to either purchase some the next time I do a big fabric trip or to at least take a sample of the WM stuff to compare and contrast unless someone else can give me their 2cents on that.

Please feel free to add any comment, suggestions, or corrections you might have.

I just want to second the thread thing. Bowls are a great project for maxilock box recipients, lol. I went through 3 spools of brown and one of yellow for my swap bowls. If you can match up stuff from your stash with thread you got too much of, it's a win win situation! :)

And for the square bowls, life is SO much easier with omnigrid squares (12.5" and 4"). I can't imagine making them without them.

Can I ask a question? If you don't use cording on the edge, do you just zig zag (satin stitch) over the edge?

TIA!

That is what I did. Except I went around twice.

:ditto: And it makes a difference if you do you second satin stitching slightly wider than the first. I also found that I really like the look of rayon thread on these bowls...gives the satin stitching a pretty sheen...looked great on the holiday bowls!

Scarlet/Bethen brought over some Timtex today. It appears to be twice as thick as the WM 4.44p/y stuff.

I snapped a pict of the 3 kinds I have on hand for refrence purposes.
