View Full Version : my cd solution needs some help!
his diapers *always* leak! What am I doing wrong? We are using prefolds & covers & I can't seem to get the legs snug enough. Even worse we have *no* money to try something new. I have some microfleece from WM - can I use that to make covers?are there any free web patterns? HELP!
Thanks so much, I know someone here can point me in the right direction

First a few questions. When you say his diapers always leak do you mean~
They always leak poo, or is the diaper sopping wet with every change?
If poo leaking is you issues, I have a few suggestions. try using a snappi and using Theresa's( from Little Turtle Knits) jelly roll fold. You fold the back edge down to where you need it then roll the side edges in. Works great. Maybe someone more web savvy then I can link it??? But remember, newborn bf poo is explosive slimy stuff. Containing it is darn near impossible. My kids could blow poo out of fitted diapers.lol
What size prefolds are you using? my son was out of infant so fast it was insane. He could pee right through an infant pf. We ended up buying him reg. size since the prem. size were so incredibly bulky on him.
What covers are you using and are they fitting well? Is the prefold tucked completely inside the cover?
WM microfleece I wouldn't try to make covers out of. I really don't think it's thick enough.
Wool is great but can be expensive unless you knit. Bummis super whisper wraps have always worked for us. the Bummis pull up covers haven't leaked yet. And really, the Gerber plastic pants don't leak and aren't horrible. They're cheap and servicable. Use them until you can get something better.

I was going to suggest the jellyroll fold too. Here is the link :)

I have a fleece cover I could send you FFS if you want it just PM me :)
He's in infant prefolds and the poo leaks out the sides, so I will try the jellyroll fold and see if that helps. He also just soaks the prefolds but I'm not sure if there's room in there for a doubler - they seem a little small in the waist (my little man is built like a football, very wide in the middle). We're using snappis and diaperwraps and some of those gerber and babies-r-us wraps (the gerber wrap is actually working best for us because the leg holes on the others are just so large).

maybe you could try pins so there is room for a doubler..or you could put the doubler on the outside, between the diaper and the cover....maybe you could use soem of your old receiving blakets at flat folddiapers..and use a doubler in there...or. lol. jsut do what i did before we discovered ec and change obssessivly. I changed ds every 15 -30 minutes for the first 3.5 months of his life

that's just diaper life with a newborn.
If it is any consolation, he would be blowing poop out the sides of a disposable too, until he grows enough thigh meat to fill the leg holes. I must have tried every brand out ther on DS #1 -- he blew out diapers for three months, until his chicken legs beefed up.
We used infant prefolds and Bumkin or Prorap covers with a lot of success on a "football" shaped kid (#2), but you will still be changing him every 15-30 minutes.
