I don't know if I can explain it but I do know that I had to keep ripping it out when I started the ribbing for a soaker. You have to learn how to distinguish when you should knit or purl so I would just practice on a swatch until I got the groove on!!

What exactly are you having problems with?

Ok, assume you are working on a 2x2 rib (knit 2, purl 2) on even amount of stitches.
~first row KNIT 2, PURL 2, do that all the way across
~second row PURL 2, KNIT 2, do that all the way across

The purl stitch is a knit stitch backwards. I know that sounds strange, but when you work a purl stitch, look at the back. It'll be a knit stitch.

I hope that helps a little :)

Ok, knit two stitches, bring your yarn to the front, then purl two stitches, bring your yarn to the back, and knit two stitches, repeat. Ribbing is very confusing when learning to knit- it just doesn't make sense, I had a very hard time wrapping my brain around it.

Yup, that's exactly right :D It's slow, tedious, and annoying in the beginning.. .but after 3 or 4 rows the pattern begins to emerge and it starts looking good. Remember to do the exact opposite on the other side, so if your last 2 stitches were a purl, on the start of the next row they would be knit.

I used to HATE ribbing, but now it's not so bad. In fact, I'm doing a sweater that's in the seed stitch, that's knit, purl, knit, purl all the way throughout. Talk about going back and forth!

OH, and I wanted to say there are alot of different ways to do ribbing... say a 4x2 rib is knit 4, purl 2... or a 1x1 rib (found on cuffs and collars alot, and socks) is knit 1, purl 1

Woohoo! Isn't that the greatest! I love knitting- it is incredible to make something basically out of nothing!
