I have hand dyed/painted wool yarn with the acid dyes (http://www.dharmatrading.com/html/eng/1344-AA.shtml) from dharma. The acid dyes were easy to use and only needed vinegar to set them.
I had NO luck with the procion dyes with wool.

I used some all natural dyes that I got from aurosilk.com, and I loved them. I am going to try to buy it in bulk and sell it a the co op that I run. I dyed some fabric and some yarn and they both turned out great. It wasn't hard to do at all. I did have to use a mordar tin salt I believe, but it came with all the instructions I needed. I would defenatly recomend it!
