A girl I know just called and said she beilieves her son has a rash from disposable diapers. She used pampers, and now switched to huggies and it isn't any better.

She knew I used cloth on my dd, so she asked if she could try some of mine. I said sure.

Will her babe have a problem with polyester if he has a problem with disposables? What is it in disposables that causes the rash?

Sept 9/04 -

She came over this afternoon and I gave her a Cloth Diapering 101 CRASH COURSE.

We tried cpf's and snappis with covers, we tried mother ease diapers and we tried the Blue Moon AIO's and she loves those (of course, they aren't made anymore)

BUT, who makes aio diapers like blue moon that are side snapping and no thicker than the blue moon?

Sep 10/04 -

She called 5 hours after she left here and said the rash is already almost gone. She wondered if vasaline could be used with the diapers and which diaper she should put on him overnight.

As she was talking, she found a sewing pin in one of the Blue Moon diapers! the head of the pin is on the inside of the diaper and the pokey end is barely poking out the edge! WOW ! I hope this doesn't discurrage her! (she that sort of person)

Anyways.. she was putting a Luke's drawers AIW with a doubler on for overnight as he sleeps for 10 hours or so (he's 4 months old)

Sept 11/04

She said he peed right through the LD AIW, and I suggested the hemp prefold and a wool cover for tonight. She likes the fitteds better, but I don't have a fitted hemp for her to try. I think it'll give her an idea if the hemp will work for her or not.

Vidura was allergic to disposable, that's why we switched to cloth. We used Huggies (I couldn't tolerate the "perfume" in Pampers). He has bad rash with purple blisters.

I'm not sure what he was allergic to with disposable, our ped said it was the gel in them.
He is not allergic to polyester/fleece in cloth diapers, however when he wears hemp diapers he gets the same blistery rash he got with disposables.

Both my kids are allergic to disposable diapers, I'm guess it's the gel. They are both allergic to baby wipes as well. And the smell of pampers just makes me ill, that fragrance is way too strong for me. UGH!

The only disposies we can use are the seventh generation and the tushies brand so I keep a pkg on hand just in case we go out of town or something. My dd was allergic to fleece in diapers too; however, my son does just fine with fleece and I prefer it on him.

Mine was allergic to the gel.

She has no problem with fleece or poly blends, but the poly binding on ME wraps gave her a rash as well.

and we had problems with some fleece unless it was on a cover. We used flannel/cotton diapers with fleece covers. The PUL covers seemed to make him break out too but in more of a heat rash(we were in NC also LOL). Oh and I found out after purchasing 3 aristocrats that Hunter is also allergic to wool LOL so a friend got a super deal! We could only really use the stacinator deluxe with any regularity.

A customer of mine had a dd who was allergic to sposies and baby wipes. She switched to fuzzi bunz and is fine, but only after we saw the rash reappear after her washing with her detergent. The rash cleared up when she began adding an extra rinse or two. Just make sure she really rinses out the detergent real well so that the detregent chemicals don't irriate the baby as well.

DS was allergic to disposables, which is why we went to cloth, too. It was apparently the chemicals used to treat the diapers - he's also very sensitive to soaps, detergents, perfumes, etc.

We never had any problems with any cloth diapers, no matter what the material was, as long as they were washed in a natural or "free" detergent. He still has to have his clothes washed in a natural detergent to this day - he hasn't outgrown the sensitivity yet (not that I've tried anything else recently!)

Mine were mostly allergic to wet wipes. However, even once I changed to washclothes, they kept rashes. Beth's bum looked like she had been burned with a curling iron over and over in several places from the wipes. Improved but still looked burned til I went to cloth.

Mine are not sensitive to soaps but are foods.

Stephanie, the Seventh Generation dipes have the gel.

My dd spent the first three months she wore Motherease One Size dipes with a bright red, yeasty looking rash on her bum. Turns out it was the sizing (remember, old time mamas?) and/or the Tide.

She still cannot tolerate Tide or any non-natural detergent, even on the towels. (Me either.)

She was also sensitive to all soaps and I had to wash her bottom with organic cloths and plain water. Even Dr. B's baby mild gave her a rash.

The elastic on Motherease covers, and any other kind of elastic, gave her red rings and rashses around her thighs. That is how I ended up making my covers. Aristocrats or pull-on fleece with no elastic were it for her, always. Nothing else was tolerated.

Everyone is so different. I'm glad you are helping this mom figure out what will work for her child.

My son on the other hand, has had no problems with sposies or cloth...just a little with redness from elastic.
