We're thinking of buying a high-quality leather couch or sectional and we have heard that they are great with kids. However, I want to hear the truth from those in the know! Thanks in advance for any help.

IMO they are the best when you have kids. You can wipe them off when something gets spilled, you can wash them, they don't stain like fabric couches. We will never have a fabric couch while our kids are young if ever!

:ditto:
We have had our leather sofa & loveseat for 5 years, and they are still in decent condition. They are super easy to clean, don't stain, yada yada. Don't get cream though- that is what we have, and cream is not a good color for kids, even in leather. If I don't scrub it every now & then it gets dirty, just an overall two shades darker kinda thing, yk? I would rather have had darker furniture, then it wouldn't be as noticable.

Thanks so much! I was a little unsure about the leather. We are considering a darker color as well- definitely not the cream one on the floor!
What do you clean them with? The sales person said to use only distilled water. Do they get scraped?
So many questions!

Yes they are!
We have six children and our sped children are VERY hard on everything.
Our leather is about 6 years old now. My only warning is to not get white or off white becuase they do look dirty and are difficult to keep clean. (I have off white)
Many pieces have vinyl on the parts that are not in contact with the body...I'd ask about this because the vinyl is not nearly as durable as the leather.
Have you looked at the microfiber couches? They feel like suede and wear like iron. Even better than leather, from what I've been told and seen. (we purchased a microfiber set for our tv room and love it.....way less $ than our leather set too)
edited to add: We use a special leather cleaner and conditioner to clean ours. But again, stay away from off-white or white! *lol* Mine does not look nice no matter how much time I spend cleaning it. (but remember it is 6 yrs old and we do have 8 people in our family as well as four cats and one dog)
HTH,
Michelle
We wanted something that would really last, but for personal reasons, we weren't comfortable purchasing leather. We bought a microfiber couch instead. It feels and looks like suede. Spills wipe up easily and it doesn't scratch at all. We're really pleased with it. (Just another option to consider while you're furniture shopping!)

After 2 fabric couches in the past 6 years we finally went with leather. The furnature store we bought it from gives us cleaner, but it still looks great and the kids are rough on it to say the least.
Ours is a camel colored - very pretty :)

We love ours...except that our 21/2 year old wrote all over the arm with a pen yesterday. I don't even know how he got the pen. I have no idea how to get pen off...I am sure they have a special cleaner for it.
But they do wipe up easy. We like ours because of the pet hair issue. We have a Siberian Husky and oh the hair!! With this couch the hair doesn't get all in the fabric.

If you want, I can take a pic of our 6 year old off-white leather and also a pic of the two month old brownish microfiber (the suede-ish set).
Not that you can't see them both in your local store. *lol* Just thought I'd offer.
When we replace our off-white leather.....It will be a toss up to be honest between microfiber and leather. One thing I'd not get is fabric. (we have four cats and they leave the microfiber and leather alone for the most part)
I'm offline for the day. Have a good day!
