I noticed on the lunch box ideas thread that you went into a MIL rant about not giving your child meat. Perhaps you should suggest that your MIL read the nutrition section in the latest edition of Dr. Spock's book Baby and Child Care (8th ed). In it he advocates a vegan diet for adults and children over the age of 2. He suggests vegetarian for prior to age 2. Dr. Spock was the premier authority on baby and childcare for the generation before us. I think she just may be surprised by what he has to say. And she may just put some stock into it. I was just reading it and thought of you and what you are trying to do for your family. It is to be commended and encouraged. Good for YOU!! ;cool:

My friend has lost 20lbs by going vegan. She says she has never felt this great... I have been considering it, but I think we would eat all starch. Because Dh and DD are so darn picky. lol.... we would be starchatarians.

Wow, I find that really interesting. I just placed a hold at my library for it. DH will have a fit.

I have to say, I was *FIFTY POUNDS* lighter on a vegan diet.

Storm's mil is like mine, she will not read the book!

hi!

I'm sorry I didn't notice this thread earlier, Hope just found it and told me:D

That is a great idea actually, I have thought of getting her some reading materials relating to vegan/vegetarian but have wondered what I can get her that she will actually put any faith in, this may be a good choice!

She may discount it completely, but it is worth a try, hey even if she doesn't believe what it says I could at least annoy her and give her fuel for the next family gossip session about what a freak I am! LOL

Thanks!!

Storm

We're still working on changing the boys diet. But we're gettin' there. :)

In the month or so we've been on a nearly vegan diet, DH has lost 20 lbs!! My FIL has lost 10, my MIL has lost 7. Just since I had baby 12 days ago, I've lost 8 lbs. :D

And we all feel SO much better!!

DS #2 hasn't had but one breathing problems episode (we think he has asthma but haven't had it diagnosed) since we eliminated all dairy from his diet.

It's been a great thing for us. I haven't told my family. Guess I'm lucky they live far away. ;)

((hugs)) Storm. You do what you feel is best for yours, and just try to ignore those who don't agree (I know, way easier said than done).

I checked out the book from the library and shared a little of it with DH while we were driving this weekend. I don't think he's convinced that he wants to go vegan or even vegetarian, but I'm hoping I'm planting some seeds in his head, and I will be trying to work on the little one's diets. I am re-thinking yogurt (she's had it twice) and meat (maybe a little chicken, maybe twice) for my 9 month old.

My question is, how do you go about going vegetarian (I know it's pretty simple)? I am especially thinking about vegan. We've gone non-dairy before, and I know it's do-able, but we will have to work out some fave meals without cheese and milk because the substitutes stink. And, I have a lot of recipies I do with white sauce, etc., so I need ideas. DH hates beans. Can't even swallow them. He's tried and ends up gagging. It drives me nuts. I'm leery of soy. When we did non-dairy before, I kind of decided that I must not proccess it well, though we all liked soy milk (EVEN DH).

Can you give me some tips?
