I found last month that I was using a detergent I shouldn't. I changed it to Sun detergent. My son is still getting a red penis from them. Especially ones with fleece inners. Last night he woke up with bliters all over his penis.

What do I do now???? :(

Is it possible that he is having a reaction to the fleece? Plus it would be a good idea to strip your diapers to get rid of the other detergent.

I was wondering if anyone had heard of someone just having reactions to the fleece. I kinda suspect it now. What do you think?

It is definitely possible to have a reaction to fleece. It is quite rare, but I have heard of it. I would discontinue the fleece.

My dd is very "allergic" to polyester. If I put a fleece shirt or anything on her she gets red and itchy immediatly.

For a quick test to see if it's the fleece, I'd suggest cutting up an old towel, or t-shirt or anything cotton, and using it to line the diapers for a few days. That might help you tell if he's sensitive to it.

Wesley was when he was little but he outgrew it, I think.

((hugs)) to the little guy! Hope he's healed soon!

OK, that is a good idea, but does any of this info say no need to try it...

If he doesn't get blisters from the CPFs that are washed with the fleece diapers then it is the fleece? Is this a good enough test?

if he doesn't get blisters from the CPFs...I'd guess it's the fleece. that seems like a good test. I suppose there's a chance that the fleece "held on" to the detergent more than the cpf's though. Ugh. I'm sorry, poor guy!

Someone posted about something similar to this awhile back- all I remember was that the little boy's penis was very red and sore, and she was certain it came from the detergent.... Gosh I'm drawing a blank now- was it something in particular in that detergent? A certain brand?? There was a whole online article about it if I remember correctly.... ARGH! I hate mommy brain!

I believe it was arm and hammer.

Yes, that was me!!! It was the Arm and Hammer Fabricare and DC's penis was so swollen from that and had a bleeding blood blister in his opening!!! It was REALLY bad.

Last night wasn't as bad, but it is still blisters and it still bothered him.

I loaned a potential customer some of my fuzzi bunz to try before buying. Thank goodness. Her daughter's entire area touched by the fleece was red and irritated. She mentioned it to her husband who said "oh yeah, I can't wear fleece without something underneath it"... so, I can't imagine your son is having a fleece problem if he's not red everywhere else the fleece is touching.

I have also had customers with serious red rashes that switched to Allen's detergent and had no problems. That made us realize that the detergent was the problem. They were able to return to using Cheer (or another) and doing one or two extra extra rinses... sometimes detergent can be stubborn and hang around. Can be very irritating to those sensitive. I suggest doing a few extra wash loads (after they are clean) and watching during the aggitation cycle. Note the amount of bubbles, it's always pretty impressive the first time you water strip. Keep doing wash cycles until the bubbles are gone or almost gone. Hope some of this helps, we've had some pretty interesting cases down here ;). Maybe also try adding some rice paper or flushable/disposable liners to your diapers in the meantime if you think the detergent may be too strong. It will also help keep buildup off your diapers if you're using a lot of creams on him because of the blisters.

Lately I have been washing the diapers with very little detergent and some baking soda and TTO. I have only had a problem with suds after rinsing a few times. It is so perplexing to me. That is why I am thinking it is the fleece. His penis usually gets the brunt of it, however his bum and balls get red (chemical burn look) often also.

When I use TTO in the diaper wash Sophie breaks out with horrid bleeding blisters in her diaper area. Maybe cut out the TTO? We can't use it here anymore.

OK, I stripped the diapers and put a fitted on him today that had a fleece liner. It was on for less than 2 hrs and he already had blisters again. So I guess we are done and I will be putting them up for sale. :(

Did you try it without the fleece?

Oh, good! Maybe let him go coverless or even naked a bit so it can heal faster.

...and, thanks. :)

I'm a bit late on this but I have major probs with polyester, even polar fleece. I HAVE to wear something under it. I am also allergic to wool.

My twins were getting rashes at night after they had toilet trained & were diaper free all day. So I tried using fleece liners for my twins to prevent the pee from being on their skin & they got a "scorched" look to the area that was touched by the fleece liner. I was using Bummis covers and it was better when for them & now for newest DS I just use a folded 100% cotton terry face cloth (very cheap ones!). Basically their purpose it a bit of extra absorption, but mainly so that it I am only cleaning poop from a face cloth size vs a huge CPF!! Then with the twins even with no fleece they started to get a tad "rashy" in the warmer weather with the bummis so I made a couple of wool covers out of a couple of DH's old wool sweaters. Rashes were gone & never came back again!! I found it interesting that they could tolerate a wet, next to the skin diaper all night long with the breathable wool cover (they aren't allergic to wool). DS has always had wool night covers since he was born & no rash!!

Let us know how it goes!!

Also as I recall polyester is BAD, BAD, BAD regarding yeast. Once the integrity of the skin is compromised (like an allergic skin reaction) it is much more prone to yeast. So something to watch out for.

Oh I also find with polar fleece I have to even make sure the collars don't touch my skin or I can end up with a rash or at least feeling very itchy.

Try washing your diapers in Dawn dish soap. Like a teaspoon or something. I also wash my diapers once in a while (every 4th wash or so) without anything. and yes, they still come out clean.
try using prefolds and a cover and see if the rash clears up
