We got one with our new house, I HATE it! Not only are you not supposed to use cast iron pans because it can scratch it but you have to be really careful about canning. You also can't use glass or ceramic so there goes my wish for a set of Princess House cookware. I've had it for a little over a week and it is already scratched by . . . no not the cast iron pan.. . . the spaghetti pot, for heaven's sake. I wish I had insisted on the gas range I wanted. Not having to clean under burners does not make up for what I can't do on this range. It's pretty and shiny for people who don't cook.

That's too bad. :( I've actually heard nothing but bad things about ceramic top ranges!

ITA We have one because dh wanted one, I wanted gas. Now we both wish we had gotten a gas stove. I haven't had a problem with it scratching, but the response time for turning it down once it's hot, takes forever and we keep over cooking food.

Trade ya? :joker:
No really I do cook (but hate cooking) but I don't can or use cast iron so I loved ours when we had one.... Now we have gas and I just hate the freaking cleaning part of it. It is never as clean as I like it to be.

Sorry you hate your stove but in a weird way I do relate! lol!

I LOVE my flat-top range, and I cook all the time. I still use my cast-iron (I love them) I just am careful that I don't drag it or scoot it, if I need to move it I make sure I pick it up and move it. Sorry you're having such trouble!

My family thinks I am nuts because everyone has them and I am the only one who thinks they are a big ole piece of crapola. Of course, I am the only one who cans, cooks with cast iron, and in general am the only one who cooks full time.

I can tell you though that I do can on mine and I also use cast iron. I figure if it breaks then it isn't such a bad thing for me since I despise it.

We are hoping for a remodel of the kitchen in 3 years and I can't wait to get stainless steel gas appliances.

LOL, I did laugh out loud at this one. I actually had that thought run through my head several times (about trashing it so I can get a new one). I am also the only one I know who cooks anything serious. All of our appliances are stainless and I have to say they are very pretty and I much prefer these to big hunks of plastic in the kitchen (ok, even though it is just a surface thing since the hunks of plastic lie within), and even if they do need polishing. They show fingerprints very easily. I dream of an industrial stainless gas range with a grill and two ovens!!! Tell me I am not the only one who sees the benefit of two ovens. :P

Oh, thanks Emma, just changed the pics yesterday. Erin's classic photo pose. hehe.

I would gladly trade, kd

it's getting better, mamawolf, it was causing me serious anxiety at first. I am using the cast iron on it anyway and as dh predicted I felt better after I scratched it, since it wasn't perfect anymore. LOL A perfectionist has to know what I'm talking about there. It does clean up easier than any other stove I've had. I'll give it that. :)

If you like glass for clean up, you can have the best of both worlds! We put new appliances in our last house and I got a GE gas range that had a glass cooktop with a warming burner in the glass in the middle--but it had sealed gas burners. I really miss that range something awful! I agree that gas is *it* if you are a serious cook. ;)

i happened upon this thread while searching for something else, but I have to chime in & say ITA - the glasstop range SUCKS! I love the house we're renting, I really do - but the glass range that came w/it is probably the first one ever made & I hate it! Darn thing takes forever to heat up, even longer to cool down, you can't adjust the temp *while* you're cooking on it...and stuff sticks to it (I'm a messy cook). I thought at first I had problems w/it because I wasn't used to cooking on a glasstop, but it's been over a year now & I hate it more every day. I want a gas stove so bad!!!

and yes, I see the benefit of two ovens, too... :)

Ame,

I totally understand about the older ones. I grew up with one, it must have been one of the first ones ever made in the 70's, LOL. It took forever to heat up, and even longer to cool off. My mother hated it too, and usually used her electric skillet and electric stock pot instead. As an adult, it amazes me that she cooked as much as she did and rarely used the stove top, LOL.

I have one of the newer glass tops, and I actually like it. I wanted a gas stove, but this area didn't have gas lines till about three years ago and it would have been major $ to get them installed in the home. Now, I don't can, and I only use my cast iron in the oven, but I do cook mostly from scratch almost every day in my stainless steel. I like the glass top b/c it is even so I don't have sauces pooling to one side. Mine also does adjust temp pretty quickly, so that is nice. The only thing I wish I had is four FULL SIZE burners, LOL. I was making lasagna sauce, boiling noodles, and frying eggplant all at the same time yesterday afternoon and I kept having to rearrange my pans b/c two of my burners are the mini ones and I was using three full sized pans!

I LOVE the glass top ranges. I have no problems with it. I'm careful not to slide things across it and i don't use cast iron pots and pans. I prefer not to have to scrub the heck out of the burner drip pans of an electric range. I dont like the idea of a gas stove cuz i'm afraid I'll blow up the house so I'll NEVER get a gas stove. I'd rather make a little fire out of weeds and sticks to cook lol Seen and heard of too many gas leak stories so there's no changing my mind :D I don't mind using the white cleaner for the flat top ranges. A little goes a long way! For someone that does ALOT of cooking and I mean ALOT then yeah maybe a gas stove is right for you or maybe some people prefer gas.
If you rent your home or apartment, can you ask your landlord if they could switch if you were to get some help taking it in and out of the house? Good luck! :)

I must say I LOVE MY DOUBLE OVENS!!!! And I have a glass top, that I have had no problems with , but I use chantal cookware (the enamel coated steel)

HOWEVER I want (I am dreaming here) a summer kitchen outside with a gas stove. You all know those kitchens they are usually near the house out by a pool or something and it is complete with all appliances and counter tops plus a built in grill ****

Okay someone pinch me!! :)

You know baking soda paste works great too! On the really horrible spots (like umm when I would burn food on there  ) I would do a thin paste and let it sit until dry and then srub using the sponge with the speical srubber thing on it (we were told not to use any type of sponge but a certain kind.. not sure if that was true but hey.. lol)
It worked as well as the cleaner they gave us when we bought the stove.

I also had a glass top and hated it. It would be ok if you didn't cook much.

I cook all the time and was having to polish the top every other day. I never had to clean my drip pans that much! Just a drop of water would burn a brown spot on the top.

Not only that, but it takes FOREVER and a day for a pot of water to boil.

I moved into another house last year and now have an electric (regular) stove and it boils water so much quicker than my other old stove (that was practically new).

I also used cast iron on the stove, but was carefull not to scoot it.

I would love to have a gas stove. We have gas piped into the house for our fireplace and am hoping DH will eventually route it into the kitchen one day as well. Gas is the way to go. When it's off, it's off.

I can't stand them!!!

We have one in this house & it cracked over the weekend! Why you might ask....because I boiled a kettle of water for tea!!!! Turned around to put water in my mug & I heard a pop. That's all folks!

I know mine was older, & who knows what's happened to it before we got it but thankfully my girlfriend had a hot plate that someone gave her when they moved & it's now mine. Who knows when my landlord will replace it.

Actually, I like my Mom's...hers is new & it's nice, but this one I have is (obviously) crap!!

My 3 cents...
