My poor Sam dog! He got a hold of a bottle of USED motor oil my FIL had sitting out by his barn. He broke open the bottle and he and the bloodhound (my SIL's dog) rolled in it and drank some of it. I went over to FIL's to get Sam home (he goes over to play with the bloodhound), and he was covered in oil! I washed him up really good, and called poison control .Sam threw up HUGE amounts. The poison control lady told me that he should be ok if it stays in his intestinal tract. It'll pass through his system or he'll throw it up, and just watch him for respiratory problems (he might have aspirated some when drinking it or throwing it up). He's fine in that aspect. He's puked twice and is getting some diarrhea.

here's what is concerning... not really... but I feel so bad for him! He's LEAKING oil from his rear end! I'm sure he's just tooting or something, but I've washed his rear, all oil off, and then he's all slick again. It's like it's coming out of his anal glands or something. Is this possible? Why would he be leaking oil from his rear?

I'm keeping him in his cage under close eye tonight. The poison control lady and the vet (yup... called her too!) told me not to worry about digestional upset, just to watch him breathe for the next 6-12 hours (it's already been close to 6 hours, no troubles yet).

Needless to say, I went over and picked up all the used oil over there and put it on a shelf. The bloodhound is fine, so I don't think she drank any. I feel like a bad mommy to my dog, but he's never done anything like this before. He usually goes over and plays with Grace then comes home (we live right next door and share a huge yard with them). Poor Sam. Please keep him in your thoughts for the next few days as the oil passes through his system.

Thanks,

:( Uh no! What a mess!

That happened to our cat once. She escaped into the garage and dipped her long fluffy tail into the oil pan! Naturally, she tried cleaning herself, and ingested some. She threw up a lot of bile and lived in the litterbox for a few days, but eventually was OK. I had to wash her in Dawn 3 times to get it out of her fur so she wouldn't ingest any more.

I hope your dog is better soon!! :)
